Reading Interest Inventory Summary
Analysis of Reading Interest Inventory I gave Mariah Sheard a reading interest inventory with thirteen questions. Mariah said she likes reading, but has a hard time finding time to do it. When she did find time to sit down and read she would ready about two hours a week. She stated that her favorite types of books were non-fiction and drama. She said that she likes both series and non-series books but a lot of the time she does not get to finish the entire series. At the time of the survey she was not currently reading a book nor did she have a favorite book. The books that were easiest for Mariah to read were books that she can relate to. Her all time favorite book is The Power of I Am. I asked her what her favorite television show was to get a feel of what she liked spending her down time watching. When I ask Mariah how she would describe herself as a reader she said she enjoyed …show more content…
She recommended two books to me. Her first recommendation was Sweetheart by Chelsea Cain. This is a mystery book is about a detective that was mistreated and the person responsible is behind bars. He soon finds out the person who was responsible has escaped. My dad is a detective so this book interest me even more. Even though this book is not considered “Young Adult Literature”, I will still be reading it for my thousand pages.
What I learned I learned it can be harder than it seems to find a book you think someone else would enjoy reading based on questions you ask them. Also, it is harder to find a book for someone who states they do not have much time to read and find it hard to read a book that is not something they absolutely enjoy reading. In the classroom, I can use interest inventories by giving one to my students then helping them find books they would enjoy reading. If the students can find books they actually want to read, it will make them more likely to love

Jennifer I really enjoyed reading your post. I really like and share your idea of reading a different book to your class daily a letting it be of their choice. One thing I would add to this is asking the students before beginning the reading is, what do they think the book is about? After listening to all their ideas read to them the first two pages, again ask them and now what do you think the book is about?…

“A book is a gift you can open again and again,” wrote Garrison Keillor. People read all the time. They read for information, for escape, for entertainment, for instruction, for guidance. They read recipes and tweets and texts. They read newspapers, blogs, and Facebook replies. In a recent survey by Pew Research, the number of people who actually read a book in the past year was 72 percent in 2015. I am one of those. As I consider my reading experiences, I realize they represent the journey I have traveled, leading me to my current academic path.…

I used to love reading. In kinder and first, my nose was stuck in a Magic Tree House book. Third, fourth, and fifth grade I basically lived at Hogwarts (in my rightfully sorted house, of course, I am a proud Hufflepuff). And in middle school, I discovered THE tween series of my generation, Maximum Ride. Reading was exciting, and even though I had done it for years every time I picked up a book it felt so novel. I was your ordinary bookworm until seventh grade when the joint power of Ms. Green’s teaching and James Patterson’s writing broke my will to read.…

In the video segment, Getting to Know Your Students (2011), Dr. Almasi states that it is important that teachers get to know who each student is as a person. Therefore, at the beginning of the year I assessed my students’ non-cognitive abilities by using an assessment tool called the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey (ERAS) (McKenna & Kear, 1990). I found that many students (from both high and low groups) enjoy getting a book for present and starting a new book. Both groups also stated…

I have never enjoyed reading. I always felt it was something that was forced. When I am given the choice of which book I want to read it makes reading a positive experience. Reading should be something that people enjoy and look forward to doing. Young adults should be required to read all genres of books but have the option of which book they read from each genre…

On the Myers Briggs Type indicator, I am categorized as ESFG which stands for Extroversion, Sensing, Feeling, and Judging. I agree with most of my assessment. I am warm, sympathetic and helpful. I do disagree with the judging. I know that in my past I was very judgmental. Being judgmental was a character flaw that I have worked very hard to correct. In the Strong Interest Inventory my highest themes were Social, Realistic, and Artistic (SRA) I agree with most of the assessment as well. The inventory stated I enjoyed teamwork, people, and community service I feel I excel in these areas. I do agree with the realistic score because I do love the outdoors but working with machinery and computer networks is not my forte. In the Artistic theme I…

Although there is much I can’t recall from my early days of reading, there are some momentous flashbacks. When I was beginning elementary school my parents were very eager to introduce me to doing a great deal of reading, they wanted me to enjoy reading for a while and they succeeded. We lived within walking distance of the public library which allowed us to frequently visit the library to read and check out books. I always remembered the vast shelves of books that seemed like they never had an end. In addition to reading at the library we checked books out to bring home to read, this allowed me to read as much as I wanted to. Correspondent to the amount of reading I did, the more I enjoyed it and improved at reading.…

My Math teacher made a difference on my reading life. He always had good books to lend me. My appreciation for reading increased with many books he suggested. I’m very glad he was in my life to help to develop my reading skills. Although, I had to learn a new language when I moved to United Sates. I still enjoy reading. My favorite books are the fiction books. I still enjoyed the feeling of traveling to different worlds and be part of adventures. If a book has a kingdom, king, historical pieces, new languages, weird people, villains, and a hero, that it will be a book I’ll…

My predictions were that she likes romantic films, soap operas, and musicals. She likes romantic films but she did a correction that she likes more to read books about romantic stories. She also complained that she is having hard times to find new books in the library. When I told her about the amazon that I can find books and order for her she got so excited and looked so happy which made me somewhat sense of fellfield that I could make this person’s daily boring life more interesting and saturated. She added that she likes watching detective films with action which seems very interesting to me that a woman in her age can have an interest in this field. During our conversation, she also mentioned that when her husband was alive they used to go together to the different…

They never asked me what do I want to read about or what I want to learn about until my 7th grade year when we had to read a book, take a test on it, and then write a book report on it. When I was listening to my teacher describe the assignment I was waiting for the circumstances. Then she said anything we want to read and do a book report on. I was dumbfounded when I went to the library because I had no idea on where to start. So I just started going to random areas of the library and seeing anything that just popped out at me and begged me to read it. Finally one did, and to this day still my favorite book I have ever read, “Iron Marshall” by Louis L’Amour. I fell in love with this book. I read it every night before I went to sleep and every day during school when I had down time during class. What drew me in was that there was action in every chapter and the story was in such good detail. I now know the saying that the book is better than the movie. And it is all because of “Iron Marshall”. After reading that book I had to see what else Louis L’Amour had because of how much I fell in love with the first one. Oh he did and to my surprise I can’t pick a favorite one! I read every single book he had in the library by the end of my sophomore year in high…

While observing Ms. Carroll’s third grade class, one particular lesson that I really enjoyed was sequencing. The lesson began with independent reading and was followed by a stop and jot post-it method. The students had the option of checking out a book of their interest and then they had to read independently for a warm-up. While reading independently, the students had to create post-it notes and write down the important events that happened, and then stick the post-it notes on the page that corresponds to that event. Having the students check out a book of their choosing can be motivational due to the fact that the students might feel more excited to read about a topic they enjoy, but if there is not a book that attracts a student they could feel forced and unmotivated to read. However, Ms. Carroll provided a wide variety of genres that could please all of the students, therefore having a personal library check out was a good method to motivate or “grab” the student’s interest before starting the lesson.…

I had my English class as the first class of the day. The teacher wanted to encourage us to read again because she noticed that many of no longer enjoyed reading. She gave us the first ten to fifteen minutes of each class to read. She didn’t care what we read as long as we were reading something. At first I was happy about the idea simply because that meant we didn’t have to spend as much time talking about writing or looking at the assigned novels we had to read.…
