Reading And Writing Impact Analysis
The Reading and Writing Impact

Much like every other kid growing up during the nineties, in a middle-class household, I watched my fair share of cartoons, played Super Nintendo, and occasionally went outdoors to play Cops and Robbers. I never had an ardor to read or write unless it was a game of MASH that I would play with my girl friends. It left me vulnerable, and I was the type of little girl to get her feelings hurt too easily. As I grew older and gained knowledge my outlook evolved. Reading and writing have been a major part of my life for many reasons. Sometimes it goes unnoticed how much it has impacted my life. I never really have taken a moment to reflect and ponder on how much it has helped improve or change my daily life. Credit must be given to my parents and grandmother for my love of reading. Ever since I was a youngster I can remember them with a book in their hands. “How come you always read?”, I would ask. They would smile and explain to me that reading makes you smarter and opens your imagination to a whole new world. This statement drove me to find my first real novel to explore.

This gave me a spark of curiosity and I made a personal game out of it, which encouraged me to read even more than I already did. Rules were simple, read the book before watching the movie. To me, this was a fun competition. My opinion almost always swayed in the favor of the book. Films left very little to the imagination. This game I played resulted in a conclusion of reading the book before watching the film. Watching a film before reading the book causes distortion of my view of the characters, events, narrative tones, and a clouded visualization of the plot that the book should help me create on my

I am not a professional reader, nor am I a professional writer. As a matter of fact, I don’t like writing at all, but then writing is a part of life. I was only 6 years old when I started to take an interest in reading and also started to learn how to read. My grandmother was a greater reader. She would read to me all the time and encourage me to read anything I could get my hands on. I would always see her with a book during her spare time.…

Reading is my life. It’s my escape from the world around me. I love getting lost in a story about monsters and myths, or a Cinderella gone wrong. If I didn’t draw as much as I did, I’d probably be the anti-social bookworm in the back, like in all those cliche teenage love stories. It’s actually quite surprising to see how many people dislike books, there’s nothing wrong with a little reading every once and awhile. But who am I to judge? I wasn’t a very big reader myself until maybe two years ago. Of course, that leads to the first reason why I enjoy reading so much.…

“A book is a gift you can open again and again,” wrote Garrison Keillor. People read all the time. They read for information, for escape, for entertainment, for instruction, for guidance. They read recipes and tweets and texts. They read newspapers, blogs, and Facebook replies. In a recent survey by Pew Research, the number of people who actually read a book in the past year was 72 percent in 2015. I am one of those. As I consider my reading experiences, I realize they represent the journey I have traveled, leading me to my current academic path.…

Everyone has their own literary narrative and their own path into literacy. The growth from picture books to those with over a thousand pages is a huge transition in one’s life. Reading has impacted my life and others such as Gerald Graff, Richard Rodriguez, and Eudora Welty. Most people cannot recall their very first experience with reading or writing. However, the majority of people can recall the moment in their lives where the way they viewed reading or writing changed drastically. The pivotal moment that truly alters how one views the written word seems to be engrained in one’s memory. When someone chooses to write down and share their journey with reading and writing, whether it be discovering it or redefining it to themselves, they create a literacy narrative.…

Although there is much I can’t recall from my early days of reading, there are some momentous flashbacks. When I was beginning elementary school my parents were very eager to introduce me to doing a great deal of reading, they wanted me to enjoy reading for a while and they succeeded. We lived within walking distance of the public library which allowed us to frequently visit the library to read and check out books. I always remembered the vast shelves of books that seemed like they never had an end. In addition to reading at the library we checked books out to bring home to read, this allowed me to read as much as I wanted to. Correspondent to the amount of reading I did, the more I enjoyed it and improved at reading.…

How could someone not love reading? I thought. I would open a book and see worlds created by the words in them. The only thing that could be more amazing than that was –and still is– the fact that at one point, someone sat down, put these words together, and created these worlds. Cue twelve-year-old mind being blown.…
