This reading was very, very interesting to me. Although it was only the first few chapters it became more interesting and spine chilling as I read on. I was very surprised to have read in the later chapters how Henrietta was treated and how the doctors acted back in the 1950s just because of segregation at the time. It really bothered me to read that the doctors would withhold information from their patients because they were to never be questioned especially if the patient was black. Having read that really made me understand how it was back then and that people like Henrietta were lucky that they were even getting treatment. But this story, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks changed how doctors treated their patients and also changed the way cancer was handled and treated.…

Words are a complex element in life to define, but the best way to explain it is “words are labels for what we know” (Cleary and Linn, 577). As individuals learn words, they are not only growing their vocabulary, but also extending their overall knowledge at the same time. What is the most efficient way for one to extend his or her vocabulary and fully understand the meaning of different words? People tend to believe that knowing the definition is all that an individual needs to know about a word. There is so much more than just knowing the definition in order for someone to incorporate a word into his or her everyday communication. Teachers tend to make the mistake in just having their students memorize a definition of a word instead of having them understand the word in its context. According to the…

    * Students are expected to read the novel assigned to their appropriate grade. In addition to the reading, students are required to respond in short-answer format to a set of study questions specific to that book, and use citations when applicable. Teachers will integrate the summer reading and responses to study questions into the beginning of the course, so students should bring their book and responses to class when they begin in August. Furthermore, students should expect some form of assessment on the book—test or essay—during the first week of class.…

Moving onto a more advance language arts class this year, I have pretty high expectations. Last year I was able to expand my writing skills, so I’m hoping to have the same results for this year as well. My first expectation is to be able to write complete sentences with fully accurate capitalization, punctuation, and intermediate grammar by the end of eighth grade. My second expectation is to also acknowledge what we learn from this year’s class so we can use these new writing skills for future classes. As for what I look in a language arts teacher, the first quality would be for her to be patient since “Patience is a key element of success”. Next would be how she is able to capture students’ attention with interesting lessons because from…

In the TPR strategy, educators communicate with their students by giving them instructions, and children show they understand what is being told through physical response. Students are not obligated or expected to answer verbally unless they believe they are prepared to do so. This approach requires slight to no constraint to speak. The child answers to the instructions with actions. In lessons, students can nod their head for a positive or negative response. They can also put a thumb up if they are in accordance to something within the lesson or thumbs down if not.…
