The film directed by John Sayles; The Secret of Roan Inish is a captivating story about an Irish family; The Coneelly’s. The family’s bond to the island of Roan Inish and the seals that reside nearby is exceptional and mystifying. Why are the Coneelly’s so drawn to the island? The family’s roots on Roan Inish start far back with Fiona’s great great great grandfather Sean Michael who arrives on the island on a prayer. Another Coneelly; Liam, solidifies the connection to Irish island through his marriage to Nula. Finally the loss of Fiona’s brother Jaime at Roan Inish keeps the island on the mind of the family almost constantly.…

My article is about the NFL football player Ray Rice who was caught on video surveillance beating up his fiancée viscously until she fell unconscious. In the article it explains that sadly, the NFL has dealt with many domestic violence cases just as bad as this one. In the criminal case, he can avoid prosecution and a criminal record by completing the pre-trial intervention program. Most people who do such an offence wouldn’t be given this option to do instead. Many people believe that since he is professional athlete, he is able to go around the justice system in favour for himself.…

In the Epic of Gilgamesh there seems to be many connections to the Enuma Elish. One of these connections is probably the most obvious one which is that in the story they have the same gods and goddesses, Some of these gods that were named in this story was Shamash, Anu and Ishtar. Anu and Ishtar were shown in the Epic of Gilgamesh from where the priestess, who was to teach Enkidu how to be human, was from which is the temple of Anu and Ishtar. In the Enuma Elish, Anu is the god of the sky and Ishtar is the mother goddess. Shamesh is the god of the sun who is the same god Gilgamesh prayed to so that he could go into the land of the living.…

History is said to be written by the winners—revealing the perspective and bias of the victorious party. This becomes particularly problematic when the losing party doesn’t posses a written language, which is exactly what occurred pertaining to European encounters with Native Americans. Because Native Americans developed no written language and customarily passed down an oral history, much of the history is lost; what is known comes predominately from European accounts. This one sided version of history increases the potential for facts to become perverted. Many of the European narratives reflect a romanticized interpretation of history and for that reason should be received shrewdly.…

The term “Dialectic” means “the art or practice of arriving at the truth by using conversation involving question and answer.” Think of your dialectical journal as a series of conversations with the texts we read during this course. The process is meant to help you develop a better understanding of the texts we read. Use your journal to incorporate your personal responses to the texts, your ideas about the themes we cover and our class discussions. You will find that it is a useful way to process what you’re reading, prepare yourself for group discussion, and gather textual evidence for your Literary Analysis assignments.…

The majority of developmental theories say that children must develop a secure primary attachment in order to develop in a healthy manner. A secure and strong attachment is clearly essential for healthy future relationships. John Bowlby’s studies in childhood development led him to the conclusion that a strong attachment to a caregiver provides a necessary sense of security and foundation. Without such a relationship in place, Bowlby found that a great deal of developmental energy is expended in the search for stability and security. In general, those without such attachments are fearful and are less willing to seek out and learn from new experiences (Hutchison, 2013). The video did portray a close relationship between Heidi’s siblings and their mother. Heidi says she has happy memories from her child hood growing up in Vietnam (Dolgin & Franco, 2002). This leads me to believe she had formed an attachment with her mother.…

Tannen’s “Fighting for Our Lives” touches on how our culture is seen as an argument culture where there are two distinct sides to an argument seen as being either right or wrong, without a middle ground. The argument culture, Tannen explains, urges us to approach the world in an adversarial frame of mind: the best way to approach any sort of idea, dialogue, or conversation is to set it up as a debate. This tactic does not solve any residing problems, by ignoring what the other person has to say and assuming your opinion is better than them is not going to resolve any issues.“In the argument culture, criticism, attack, or opposition are the predominant if not the only ways of responding to ideas.” According to Tannen we battle for top dog, strive to be the best, and to prove that we are right whether that means to criticize or manipulate words around in order for a feel of self-satisfaction.…
