Reader Response # 3

Ranch Girl by Maile Meloy from Contemporary American Short Fiction

The story is told in second person, which gives the reader a sense of being in the story, at the same time being an observer. It begins with telling you where you stand in the socio-economics’ and in the eyes of your peers. “If you’re white, and you’re not rich or poor but somewhere in the middle, it’s hard to have worse luck than be born a girl on the Ranch. It doesn’t matter if your father is the foreman or the rancher – you’re still a ranch girl, and you’ve been dealt a bad hand.” (551) The story goes on, telling you where you where you live on the Ranch, who your father is (the foreman on Ted Haskell’s Running H cattle Ranch) and how you keep your room still decorated from when you were ten. You never have friends over, so you can keep your room that way. You never have friends over because no one wants to come over to a Ranch girl’s house. The second person point of view pangs at the readers emotions. You feel the hunger for attention and flush it creates when Andy Tyler flirts with you. The author re-creates the feelings of a teenage girl, somewhere on the cusp of popularity, in such a way it is almost impossible not to get caught up with the story. I was never a Ranch girl, but when reading the story I felt akin to the feelings of the narrator. The experiences described are vastly different from any of my own child/young adulthood but the universal truths laid out are the same with any person.
The narrator has fallen in love with a boy from the rodeo. She goes and watches him fight every Friday. She s sixteen and the Ranchers daughter, Carla, and her curls they hair into perfect ringlets. Trying to catch Andy’s eye. When he gets up from fighting, he asks her to give him a rainbow and she twirls her rainbow gloved hand around his face. The narrator wants to marry Andy Tyler. The blushing hope of picking out her

The opening description of the bunk house immediately shows the lack of possessions owned by the ranch workers: ‘Over each bunk there was a nailed apple box with the opening forward so that it made two shelves for the personal belongings of the occupant of the bunk.’ This connotes that the ranch workers owned very little more than what they wore, showing their shared sense of poverty and lack of security; as they travel from ranch to ranch so often they never get a chance to settle down and establish a real life and home.…

For example, in the beginning of the story the book explains how poor Billy’s family is. How his dad cannot afford two coon dogs for Billy and how his mom has to make all of the family’s clothes. The family is dirt floor poor. I can picture a shack that the family lives in with a fireplace, holes in the wall, rotting furniture, an old iron stove it’s not a very pretty place. Another part of the story that is described very well is at the coon hunting contest when Billy, his father, Grandpa, and the judge go out hunting the night of the competition.…

In the article The Myth of the Cowboy, Eric Hobsbawm argues that the tradition of the American cowboy has become an invented myth. All the Pretty Horses, by Cormac McCarthy explores the journey of John Grady Cole and Lacey Rawlins, who leave Texas and travel to Mexico where they acquire the cowboy lifestyle. The text could fit into the same category Hobsbawm describes but it also serves as a more realistic and honest description of the cowboy experience.…

The author uses 1st person. I personally prefer reading stories written in first person so I as the reader can make a character. When a story is written in first person it is usually more emotional and personal. The language used in this story is pleasant. It is not to formal or informal. The dialogue is funny as it is written in Old American Farmer Language like when they use ‘golly’ and ‘gosh’ I find it very amusing. There isn’t too much description in this story which I absolutely hate so …

I think this story is trying to show that even though the time period has a lot of issues still going on between whites and blacks, that this farmer does care for his worker and actually feels bad compared to some white people who wouldn’t have felt very bad or just though oh it’s an accident oh well. They do go to say that the farmer feels that he is going to face troubles from blacks due to they feel it wasn’t an accident and only look at him as being guilty and murder. I think that the farmer feels extremely bad about the whole situation and tries to make up or help in any way by giving the young boy a proper funeral and burial. At the funeral the farmer is given the cold shoulder from the boy’s family because of the tensions between the races. I think that they wanted to show that not all stereotypes are real and that some of the farmers who had slave workers did care about them and not just look at them as a slave to do their work.…

    The Crush Short Film

The short film begins in a class of a primary school. There is a teacher – Miss Patty Purdy, who is giving her pupils some assignment to prepare for next class. Among those pupils, there is a boy named Ardal – the main character of the film. He’s looking at his teacher with a loving gaze, which reflects the fact that he has a crush on Miss Purdy. After the class, when all of his classmates have already gone out, he comes to his teacher and give her a toy ring, which demonstrates his affections and is considered as “engagement”. Miss Purdy is so surprised and really appreciates that. In the evening, while having dinner, he asks her mom about the time when she was married his dad. When he comes back to his room, he writes: “Marry Miss Patty” in his ten-year planner book, by which we can see that he’s really serious about his crush. The film continues with a momentum, with the rising action: while shopping with his mom, Ardal meets Miss Purdy, who happily explains that she’s just been proposed with a real-engagement ring on her finger by her boyfriend named Pierce, and she’s going to get married, which really upsets Ardal. Pierce appears to be a jerk, when he refuses to take her for lunch to celebrate the engagement, and insisting on going to a football match. This is the reason why Ardal changes his attitude towards Miss Purdy in the next day at school. The problem becomes even worse when Ardal sees his dad putting a gun carefully in the closet, and he is so comtemplating his options while starring at that closet. One day, after his class, Ardal comes to see Pierce when he is impatiently waiting for Miss Purdy outside of the school and tells him not to marry Miss Purdy, but all he gets is just the treatment as a small kid for him from Pierce when he says to Ardal that: “She said that you were too short”. But Ardal still insists on his decision when he says that he wants a duel – to the death with…

I let out a silent scream as the doll, somehow, was staring right at me! I dropped it. It's all my fault, i thought. That i shouldn't chase the girl and this wouldn't happen. Was i going crazy? I picked up her bag, and rummaged through it. A dirty book with pictures that i found. I flipped over the pages and i saw the most terrible thing in my life, it was a photo of when her parents died. And another was at a b'day party, she was covered with dirt, as though she'd been running through the forest and carried a knife. She had the most terrible memories.…
