Rainy Season in the Tropics
Descriptive Analysis Paper Ashley Baraan
Frederic Edwin Church (1822-1900) October 2012
Rainy Season in the Tropics (1866) Art 118

Rainy Seasons in the Tropics, (oil on canvas) was painted by an amazingly talented artist, Frederic Edwin Church. Most of his paintings consisted of the nature, such as forests, the sea and sky. Rainy Seasons in the Tropics happens to be my favorite one by far. It is currently displayed at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, California. To me, this painting represents the beauty and true value nature brings to life. This painting, as well as his other ones, makes you want to step into it and explore that part of the world for yourself. What drew me to this painting was the halo in the open sky, and as you're looking at the painting, you're looking down at the whole valley. You can see the forest, the canon, the misty water fall and the explorers on the trail. To me, it makes me wonder what it would be like, to be exploring that beautiful place. The birds eye view, Frederic Edwin Chuch, gives you just draws you in because you can see the valley as if you are really there. There's a mixture of gray and dull colors along with a dark green forest. I think the primary concern of the painting would be the misty waterfall and canyon that catches are attention first. Along side of that is the dark green forest with explorers heading off into the unknown of the jungle. The visual weight of the explorers make the composition of the painting very balanced because they're wearing shades of red and blue, and surrounding them are dark spots of the forest and vast spaces of the sky and valley. My favorite part of this painting is the Halo. The halo shows the viewers the beauty of nature, and it's right in the middle. It stretches across the painting connecting the two together. The halo is a curved line, and it shows naturalism which is exactly what this painting is about. The colors of the Halo brings the

What first catches the viewer 's eyes are the vivid colors used in the painting. Ultimately what jumps out the most is the man on the right 's red robe. The artist intended this for a reason, discussed later. The room where the men are standing is front lit. Also the atmosphere is not hazy. There is no hint of sffumato. It is very much unlike the Romantic works produced earlier in the century. Rather the edges of the figures and of other objects in the picture plane are clearly defined. The artist "renders every object in the painting with meticulous clarity" (Smith 1). To see this work in person is really quite impressive. The painter has achieved a great sense of depth in the painting, as well as a strikingly realistic quality. The picture taken for this paper from the Albright-Knox 's web page simply does not do this work justice. One 's experience of standing in front of this painting is that of awe. The artist has depicted everything in the scene so realistically, and yet has made it look better than it probably did in real life. Everything in the painting has a rich, glowing quality about it.…

One of the major reasons I was very interested in this painting was the excellent use of colors. William uses these colors to show movement and to depict a sense of realism to his viewers. He uses a combination of warm, bright and dull colors to provide beauty to the painting. It is a realistic painting in which we can see realistic objects like the clouds, the grass, the earth, sand, mud, little stones/rocks, shrubs, water and a whole lot. Looking at this painting at a glance, I thought it was a photograph; that is how realistic it is. William uses colors in little…

The variation of colors he used created an outstanding display of nature that I never thought possible. I believe his purpose was to create imagery, an illusion to the audience, as if they were looking into the American West, through his painting. The entity of light was the key element of this painting. The form of a fine white line amid a mass of water allowed the separation of the earth and the heavens. What is intriguing about the painting is that as quickly as the earth and heaves were separated, the two joined once again at the same location. The reflection of the lake elaborated on the purity of the water and the richness of life. The contrast of dark and light colors served a great importance in his painting.…

The bright vivid colors attracted me to this work; I found it interesting how the artist played off of mostly reds and blues and I liked how my attention was immediately drawn to the center of the painting. All of the people seemed to be involved in the miraculous birth of the Jesus. The greatest aesthetic strength of this painting is its use of vivid color, the aesthetic weakness I found was the lack of the artistic use of shadow. I…

The bold curved lines of the sky flow directly into the figure and endure to form the body of the individual. Van Gogh uses long, heavy yet equal brushstrokes to express feelings and motion. Motion is the main element in this painting Vertical lines such as the tree and church tower delicately breaks up the composition without withdrawing from the powerful night sky. Van Gogh's use of white and yellow creates a twisting result and draws attention to the sky. And the usage of color to send emotion. Munch also used colors that were contrast between hot and cold colors, contrast of complimentary. By using artless forms, Munch is able to force his viewers to focus on the emotions that the sight and subject secrete rather than simply viewing an exact picture of one particular scene. The cautious use of balance also helps the viewers understand the indirect consequence of The Scream. Munch placed the unpleasant figure in the focal point and attains a sense of balance by inserting two smaller figures who are walking into the scorching sunset in the distance on the left side and by creating a dominant arch in the upper right hand corner. But the focal point created by Van Gogh is the tree-like structure projecting out on the bottom…

Marks use of monochrome blue is what really drew me to this piece. By using only blue I believe Mark has perfectly reflected the mood and atmosphere of the situation through the use of color. The blues seen in the painting are mostly deep or dark blues with the only lighter softer blues seen in the calm waters of the lily pond. Even in the water we see the reflection of the dark clouds above…

It is important, before looking at the painting, to first understand the purpose and direction modern art usually has. “The entire gamut of modern art can be viewed from the vantage point of the artist’s attitude towards the object, an examination which should throw some light on the larger problem of how the modern artist chooses to interweave art and reality and, ultimately, of what constitutes reality for him (Johnson 11).” A major part of interpreting modern art lies within determining that reality. Viewers search for their own meaning in the painting since the simplicity of most modern works leaves much room for imagination. When the modernism phase of artwork began it was not exactly obvious to the public, but over time there “came about a general awareness that there was such thing as a modern sensibility, and that that sensibility had the key to modern life (Russell 126)”. It was thought that if one was modern they had to easily be able to notice changes of life and be accommodating of “the unconscious and the irrational” side of humans (Russell 126). These aspects will later influence the works of Walt Kuhn in his various oil…

The first thing to note is the overall composition of the painting. First and foremost it is a landscape painting. The colors are very monochrome; the space is stretched to reveal a depth to the painting that the eye cannot capture; and there is stillness to the art that embraces nature and serenity of life. In the right-hand corner of the painting there is calligraphy. The calligraphy lacks the precision, but is very clear in its form, much like the depiction within the painting itself.…

The admiration and inspiration by the nature is shown by placing the rainbow in the middle ground of the work: it stretches across the sky to connect the landscapes. It is a creation by the nature: like a miracle, after a stormy day, it brightens the painting with plenty of colors. Author paints it geometrically perfectly to show the sophistication of this natural miracle. Church is very attentive to details: the rainbow is painted with seven colors that are getting darker to the bottom and lighter to the centre of the rainbow; it has some highlights at the spot where the sunshine pierces through it; it is endless and hiding from the viewer’s eyes in the mist. The rainbow disappears in the spot with no clouds, where the sky is ideally blue. This stresses the dynamics of the nature, its movement and emotional depth. It looks so realistic, almost alive, and…

The style is rough & dark which shows horror, the ugliness of the turbulent storm. He makes effective contrast between distant and near views. You could see the ship far off in the distant, still being rough up by the sea, even after throwing the slaves overboard. While in the front you see sharks attacking all the floating bodies of the dead slaves. The vertical line in the center is of a bright sunrise in the far which separates the scene. The bright red and yellow color on the left shows lighting hitting the water. The red and brown color in the water shows the brown skin slaves…

The color palette of the painting is diverse, while red and warm earth tones dominate the painting. The light source seems to be in front of the left section of the picture while dispersing towards the right. The use of light gives the illusions of volume. The gradation of the sky is very exaggerated. The top is a dark blue and as it reaches the middle the sky is very light. The painting has a smooth finish and is very detailed. The flowers on the bottom are very intricate as well as the patterns of the people’s garments. Each face has a distinguished and unique appearance; no two faces are…
