Rainbows
Assignment 1b: Rainbows
When reading over the possible weather discussion categories the word rainbow stuck out for me. I have always wondered what makes a rainbow, and every time I see one I am in disbelief that I’m seeing such a remarkable thing. Rainbows are one of the most beautiful spectacles natures has to offer so beautiful, in fact, that they've inspired countless fairy tales, songs and legends. According to Wikipedia.com “Rainbows are optical and meteorological phenomena that cause a spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the Sun shines onto droplets of moisture in the Earth's atmosphere.” Scientifically a rainbow spreads a continuous spectrum of colors across the sky into an arch. The fundamental process at work in a rainbow is refraction the "bending" of light. Light bends or more accurately, changes directions when it travels from one medium to another. This happens because light travels at different speeds in different mediums. I have never really studied rainbows and how they occur until now, what I have read on Wikipedia is really remarkable to me. Nature works in so many interesting ways, the world is an astonishing place. I grew up in Santa Rosa, and have been so grateful to have experience many rainbows in my time. I remember once when I was younger; probably about six year’s old, playing outside after a big rain storm. When looking back on the experience and talking with my mom, she says she it had been raining and cloudy for a few weeks. I was excited to finally get to play outside. I remember going outside and looking to my right and left. To the right I saw dark rain clouds, and to my right I saw the bright sun. Then I remember feeling a rain drop and I looked straight ahead and saw a double rainbow. It was the most amazing experience to me, being a young little girl. I remember calling my family outside, and asking my mom to take pictures of the rainbows. The first rainbow I saw was awfully bright red, orange, yellow, green,
