Rainbow Environmental Services Case Study
Can you imagine living in a neighborhood or even going to school near a health hazard? Rainbow Environmental Services, a trash disposal company located in Huntington Beach, has had the contract as the city’s trash hauler since the late 1950s. However, nearby residents, including two of the Ocean View School District’s schools, have complained about their health due to the open dump and their demolition debris. I feel that Rainbow is polluting both of the OVSD schools and the homes of nearby residents. To start off, the open dump has been attracting seagulls to nearby areas. These areas include Oak View Elementary and Preschool, two schools of the Ocean View School District. The seagulls are described to be taking food and dropping trash, that they’ve collected from the dump, onto both of the school's campus areas. In addition, the seagulls also leave and drop behind feces. As students rush to their classrooms, they use their sweatshirts and any other items to shield themselves from the feces. All of the staff members, including teachers, have claimed to have been “hit” at least once. Besides on students and teachers, the feces is on “every square inch” of the school, including buildings, playground area, and on the field. Now rodents such as rats, …show more content…
To avoid the problems that dealt with seagulls, Rainbow used hawks and falcons to chase them away. However, this solution only worked for a short amount of time. When Rainbow took these birds away, the seagulls returned. As a result, residents have continued to avoid getting hit by seagulls. In conclusion, Rainbow Environmental Services is causing health hazards for both of the Oak View schools and for nearby neighborhoods. As a result, there has been an increase of health concerning complaints. Even though Rainbow had used some solutions to solve some problems, it had only worked for a short amount of

I am filing this complaint due to the dishonesty associated with West Laurel Water Association. West Laurel Water District asked ($4,500.00) forty-five hundred dollars to provide a water meter and water service for my new home construction. Two (2) representatives from West Laurel Water Association came out to my families' property and told us to temporary hook into a family member's water line for temporary service until grant money could be used to reduce the installation of my very own water meter to the more reasonable cost of ($500) five-hundred dollars. After this promise was made, we personally undertook the cost of ($250) two-hundred fifty dollars, along with the associated labor, to hook into a family member's water line for temporary…

In many cases, most people in the United States; even around the world do not acknowledge that our planet is being polluted by coal plants and other industrialized nations. Climate change is a problem and threat to the world. In the reading of “Environmental Warriors Going To The Root Of The Problem” by Greg Jobin- Leeds and AgitArte, it talked mainly about the Earth being polluted and the reasons for that. The people that aren’t wealthy are affected by the plants that are built in the cities around them. The non wealthy do not have the authority to stand up and make the environment better for themselves.…

A Massey Corporation coal mine in “Coal Valley” West Virginia was built next to Marsh Fork Elementary. Parents began to worry about their children when black coal dust began covering the playground, and a one-hundred-foot dam was built behind the school that held hundreds of thousands of gallons of toxic waste. The dam also leaked toxic heavy metals into the local watershed, poisoning the community’s water. These dangers prompted community members to act. Community members protested for nearly 5 years, meeting the governor and senators of West Virginia and did not gain any progress until an incident occurred at the mine that prompted Massey Corp. to donate money for a new school.…

After reading Jonathan Kozol’s essay on Fremont High School in Los Angeles, I had to stop and rethink every detail I had just read describing the schools appearance, education offered and the overall sanitation of the school. I simply did not realize the school systems in the United States today were in such horrible conditions. While describing the school itself I learned it consist of roughly 5,000 students. The perimeter is protected by an eight foot steel fence topped by spikes. This sounds more like a prison than a high school. According to the essay the teachers stated some of the classrooms took place in converted storage closets that were windowless and nasty. Teachers stated, “ the line for kids to get their food is very long and the entire period last only 30 minutes. It takes them 15 just to walk from their classes and get through the line. They probably get 10 minutes to eat their meal.” According to the teachers most average students in ninth grade are reading at a fourth grade level. This tells you they are lacking education and their chance of a decent career is slim. The school had 15 fewer bathrooms than the law required and only one or two “working.” Not to mention they were always unclean and lacking supplies. I could not believe children were treated like this in a school system. It is so unfair. I could not believe that this school was still running and these children didn’t get the things they deserve to learn. Every child deserves the right to an education. It shouldn’t matter if the side of town is not as rich as other areas. (Pg. 708) “Rats in eleven classrooms” this was maintenance reports. “Rat droppings” are recorded “in the bins and drawers.” This would make you want to drop out of school if you had to endure these horrible conditions.…

Colney and Pitts is a pharmaceutical company that is located in California. Colney and Pitts are planning to set up a manufacturing plant near the Aberdares mountain range in the eastern highlands of Kenya. Their main purpose is to use this facility to manufacture medications for prostate cancer. Located in the Aberdares Mountain is a native tribe called The Kikuyu. After much research and extensive surveying of the area, it was determined that a type of evergreen tree known as “pygeum” or prunus Africana, is used by the tribes people to cure what they refer to as “old men’s disease”. We would commonly know this as prostatitis and genitourinary disorders. “The species has been over-exploited and is becoming rare in most areas” (Nonjinge, 2006). After putting together a plan of what they want to accomplish, Colney and Pitts have budgeted $250,000 to start developmental activities in the region. However, they estimate that the amount of money that can be made by selling the prunus Africana over the counter, will estimate about 220 million dollars a year.…

recent times. In brief, environmental racism is a crime against humanity referring to “the deliberate targeting of communities of colour for toxic waste disposal and the siting for polluting industries” (Robert D. Bullard & Dr Benjamin Chavis 1993). According to the Commission for Racial Justice in the US, approximately half of all Native Americans live in communities with toxic waste sites that are uncontrollable or left unsupervised and a study conducted found that three of the five largest waste facilities dealing with hazardous materials in the United States are located in poor black communities. Children in these areas are nearly 9 times more likely than economically advantaged children to be exposed to lead levels so high they can cause severe learning disabilities and neurological…

While watching the video “Children in American Schools”, there were a lot of things that I found very surprising. Since here at Elida High School we have such a nice, clean environment to learn in, I couldn’t imagine trying to learn in the conditions some of those students were. I couldn’t believe there were schools with holes in the walls, water all over the floor, roof leaks, and still run off of coal. It’s really dangerous to have kids in these conditions, as they usually aren’t very careful as it is and someone could get hurt. If I was in that position, I would feel as if they didn’t really care about my education if they don’t care to give me a safe or clean place to receive it.…

The house you’re living in, do you like it? Is it clean? Do you have a driveway, a backyard that is clean with no garbage out in front of your house, a garage where you can park your nice car? Is your neighborhood clean? Are your neighbors white? Or black? The neighborhood you live in are there big companies around that are polluting the area or a river that the chemicals are dumped in? Living in St.Louis you can see that right in our own back yard. If you go to a rich area neighborhood you will not see any big chemical companies around the big houses, you see long drive ways and see green grass. You walk downtown and see most African American in the neighborhoods you see the building are close together with facilities around big companies,…
