Racism In America Today
In many history classes, students learn about the past. Unfortunately, racism is viewed as a past event in history that has resolved over time due to historical events. In this case, racism is still around and it impacts people all over the United states. Racism isn’t just saying a racial slur towards an individual, it is shown through objects and actions. The first step towards facing racism is to accept that is a problem today. The reason why many Americans have a hard time recognizing racism in our country today is because the lack of understanding how it is shown throughout our everyday lives.

Racism became a problem as early as the 1800’s. It originated in Europe by people being forced into labor without pay die to their skin color. This would be called slavery. Slavery then began to spread throughout the world and into the United States. United States was one the earliest countries to try to eliminate slavery. In a historical aspect, our country was literally split up into two different sections. One section was for the slavery movement and fought to keep it going. The south was the biggest problem for our country to move on and grow out of slavery. Although, many people felt as if slavery ended, that did not mean segregation would end as well. It is a huge conception that colored people got all of their rights gained back after the Civil War. In fact, the laws made it almost impossible for colored people to get voting rights, taxing rights, and civil rights. Segregation almost completely took place of slavery and it began to tear people down inside and out. Many colored people were killed due to their riots to protect their rights. Currently in our society today, children and adults are not segregated. In the 1900’s segregation was so horrific, that colored people were not allowed to drink the same water as white people. Today, everyone had the same rights. Unfortunately, because time has changed people feel as if the past is only the past. In reality, racism is still a problem. Even if we are not segregated or don’t have slavery anymore, the problem has not resolved. Like Halford H. Fairchild writes “But racism is a current event; only its expression is more disguised and subtle” (Fairchild, 19).
