Racism and Racial Social Justice
Racism is a concept that has been in existence for hundreds of years, present all over the world. It is a global issue because racism involves everyone everywhere. Racism is the ideology that people of the same race share the same set of characteristics traits, abilities and qualities and intellectual, moral and cultural behaviors are inherited which leads to the belief that some racial groups are superior to others. Racism is a serious issue because it not only involves the people’s perspective on the different races, but also how racism and discrimination are used as tools of propaganda for inculcating fear and hatred of others in times of conflict and war, even during economic downturns. Change has to be made, but the challenge that is being faced is that some people don’t see the need because they are not on the receiving end of racism.
Racism is evident in everyday life. Today, racism has reached a level whereby one’s skin color is being used against in education, employment and housing. Doors of opportunities are closed simply because of one’s race. Although such extreme racism is not openly present in Singapore, it does not mean that it does not exist in other countries. For example in America, racism is rampant in all areas of employment. In America, the sad truth is that the inferior races are the Latinos and African-Americans while the Caucasian-Americans is the superior race. Often people of color are hired last and fired first. As a result, the people of color are greatly affected disproportionately by budget cuts and downsizing. This is seen by the following statistics: the unemployment rate during the third quarter of 2010 (the period of economic downfall) reached 6.1% for whites and 18.9% for blacks. The unemployment rates in Maryland reached 6.1% for whites and 11.3% for blacks and in Virginia; it reached 6.3% for whites and 13% for blacks. .
