Racial Diversity in Society Worksheet

Part I

Complete the following using the MySocLab Social Explorer Map: Income Inequality by Race (located on the student website) as a reference:

• Select 1 racial group from the list below:

o African American o Asian American o Arab American o Hispanic American/Latino o White/Caucasian

• Write a 150- to 300-word summary of the economic, social, and political standings of that group. Use additional resources if necessary, from the University Library or your textbooks. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

African Americans started out in this country in a position that was less than desirable. Since the Civil War they have made tremedous strides economically, socially, and politicaly. They started out with no money, and not being able to own any land, or anything else for that matter. Today they own homes and businesses. In the past African Americans, have had issues socially, such as not being treated as equals racially. They were treated as an inferior race by Whites. Ever since the slaves were freed, African Americans have been making strides politically as well. They started out with little to not political power to today we have a Black man as our President. In the past there were laws that prevented African Americans from even voting in elections.

Part II

Answer the following in 50 to 150 words each. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

What is racism? In what ways does racism affect diversity?

Racism is the hatred of another person or group of people simply because of their skin color, language, customs, or where they were born. Racism affects diversity by not allowing us to learn from each other. If a person is racist, they are not likely to associate with people of another race.

How do racial groups interact in contemporary America? Are interactions positive, negative, or neutral? Support your response using proper citations.

This question depends on where you live and what kind of community you live in. For the most part I think most races get along, although there are the few times where interactions can be negative. I believe that most of the interactions among different races are positive though.

Are there existing social inequities based on race? Why or why not?

I do believe that there are social inequities based on race. I think a lot of times people look down on others simply because of the color of their skin regardless of whether or not it is politically correct to do so. I believe that some people think they are just better than others and it may not even be related to race.

What do you believe to be the causes of racial prejudice and discrimination in today’s society?

I think in our society today that terrorism has a lot to do with racial prejudices and discrimination against Arab Americans and Muslim Americans. I also believe that there is still a little bit of a superiority complex among Whites when it comes to Blacks. I know plenty of people who say that they are not racist, but I hear things come out of their mouths that say otherwise.
