Race Reflection Essay
As a child, I was often surrounded by television and different forms of media all the time. I was always watching the news and hearing about stories from across the nation. I recall specifically watching the news on election night 2008. Thousands of people were televised roaring,"Yes we can!" towards a young blank candidate who seemed to appear out of nowhere from Illinois. He gave a powerful speech at his home state before the results of the election were released. That night history was made when Barack Obama won the presidency in a never before seen landslide election. That night America celebrated like no other night before. I never fully began to understand why race was an issue until my eighth grade year, where I spent the majority of history class learning about race issues in the United States. Since my eighth grade year, I have increasingly become more passionate about this particular issue. As I began high school, my ideas on race began to expand dramatically- given that I attend a school that has a much larger minority population than the other schools in my district. Because my school is primarily composed of Black and Latino students, I have learned a great deal of culture, history, and art from these groups. Being a Latino, society has its expectations for me, however, I don't feel as though my race should determine what I am capable of. I am very passionate about civil right and hope to build upon my knowledge through this program. I hope to develop the discussion skills necessary to excel in the field of civil rights, which I hope to devote the rest of my life to. Spending the summer at TASS will empower me with a strong mindset towards the field. I want to fuel my passion by engaging in this program with an open mind and a motivated personality. At TASS, I hope to rediscover what it is I am passionate
