Race Based Crime Statistics Essay
There has been significant debate whether to collect race-based data in law enforcement. In my opinion, I think going forward with this idea would be a dangerous and misconceived part when in relation to solving crimes. It is a large can of worms when it comes to this idea. I suspect it is actually impossible not to collect the statistics, as a person's details will have to be entered into the database when they are arrested. Once the data is there, is it really up to us how we interpret it? Maybe the question should be 'Should we draw any conclusions from race based crime statistics'?
Moreover, one of the possible benefits of gathering race-based idea by law enforcement would be if they used “race” as way to look at the influential factors in order to analyze the social disorganization, poverty, homelessness, mental illness, drug use, and overall crime activity such as gang violence, crime rates, prostitution, murders and even suicides. Furthermore, law enforcement can look at these statistics and further use it to piece together how all these factors are affecting a particular geographic territory. This does not include one-on-one violence, which is pretty evenly distributed across income groups and is more to do with intelligence and education. Gearing away from race-based data would allow law enforcement can spend more time on analyzing whether specifics needs such as supporting people who are more vulnerable to homelessness, poverty or crime, rather than pinning a particular crime on a category of race. Law enforcement have the power to use it by either enabling issues to persist or use it to reduce crime, and potentially attempting to understand societal issues more
