Race and Ethnicity
According to the text, what is a possible self? Why does it matter that we have one? According to the text, possible selves are “multiple self-understandings of who one might be in the future; [they are] images representing a range of self-options for the future.”(232) This means a person has many ideas of who they want to be, and these ideas help construct a core identity and choice of who they eventually want to be. This theory also incorporates the notion, in any given time, people come to realize how they would feel about particular situations and where they fit in society. Where ever the person is in his or her life course creates these ways of thinking based on everything that happened to him or her in the past. An individual may hope to change who she or he is in the present moment and could wish for another self, thus creating a possible self. Agency and identity work hand in hand with this concept because in order to achieve this particular possible self, one must change his or her ways of thinking and behavior. Unfortunately, the downfall is to become an unwanted self, the “feared self.” Possible selves describe someone’s fears and ambitions. They also can lead to what someone decides is her or his purpose in life. Depending on social circumstances, the likelihood for the success of a wanted future self is ambiguous, and since life is always changing, the person’s possible selves are always being remodeled to fit what has become of the life course. What is practical evaluation and how does it work? Practical evaluation is the “agentic capacity of individuals to choose and select courses of actions. . . People assess the situations they encounter and make decisions to act in particular ways rather than others.” (202) This is important to the micro perspective because it comes down to the actual individual’s judgments to come towards a decision which impacts the life course and may have multiple consequences. At one point in time the U.S. Census defined someone as a "negro" if they were one-sixteenth black. That is, if one of your sixteen great-great grandparents was of African descent (and the other fifteen were of "white" European descent), you were defined as "negro". In Jamaica, people believed to be of "pure" African descent are described as black. People who are bi-racial are usually described as "colored". In Brazil, there are even more differentiations of those believed to be of African descent. The point of all this is that our definitions are culture-bound and socially constructed. They are, therefore, not particularly scientific and change over time. This does not mean that race and ethnicity have no real meaning. They have meaning because we give them meaning.…

Philosophers often say that it is important to find yourself, to identify who you are. But the self is not something one finds, it is something one creates through the process of change. The Encarta Dictionary: English (North America) defines identity as “the name or essential character that identifies somebody or something” (def.1). We all have sets of characteristics that we recognize as…

Many people; especially philosophers find themselves contradicting with the subject matter known as ‘SELF’. What is the actually and truthful definition of the word itself and does it change or not? If it does change, then who can truly experience and notice it? Among many philosophers, Hume confidently states that personal identity depends on three relations of such as resemblance, contiguity and causation.…

Many people do not know the differences between race and ethnicity. Race is defined by the physical characteristics, while ethnicity is by the nationality or cultural region. I define race as something that separates people. I do not like to even use race to define myself because I begin to be characterize by it. Race is a factor that was used back in the days to make the differences in people. Race made people realize that they are different than the one other person. Race begin to be have a social constructed on people. I have a little sister who is what you call a light skin black girl and I am called a dark skin black girl. People would tell me that my sister is prettier than me because she is light skin. My sister was always called the pretty sister and I was always called the ugly sister. I allow society to tell me whether or not I am a beautiful girl. When society starting comparing to my sister, I began to down myself. I began to uplift people and tell them that they are beautiful. I would tell them to not let anyone to tell that they are not, but I did not believe it for myself. I began to feel that Society made me feel that it is acceptable to be called the ugly girl because my skin color, but in reality it was never okay. I feel that it is never okay to call someone out of something they can’t control. People do not have the choice to decide what race they are going to be in their lifetime. The problem with social constructionist is that they make people’s faults something to always worry about.…

"I can't help it, that I am Black." "Why can't people except me the way I am?" "Do you want me to go hang myself?" Surprised that someone would say this things still in this century, well don't be because race will always be there. These are the things that were said by a floor mate of mine name Shelly. She is so nice but she is always upset because this guy name Mike makes remarks about her and she can't say or do anything to change how he feels. She got drunk last night and she said everything that was on her mind to Mike and all he did was walk away. The reason I told you about Shelly because she is only one of those many people who go through torcher from other people. I thought that what Mike was doing to Shelly was unfair because she and her family has worked so hard to be where they are today. To my knowledge, Shelly's parents are probably middle class and are fitting in the society. On the other hand, Mike's parents are in high class level and I think that is why he is the way he is towards Blacks. He once told me that he has never lived in the same area as a Black family.…

His conclusion: The divergence between self & other started with the evolution of vibrant item, which explore self-preservation from threats originating from the world outside. Dennett commences with a description of the primitive self, an organization that "tends to separate, calm, & preserve allocations of the world [and] thereby writes & continues boundaries" (Dennett).…

Although the topic of the certain short stories and poems have different themes and comprehension of what corresponding works that might have similar or different topics, will tell a person what racial background and ethnicities are represented in the short story “Country Lovers” and the poem “What It’s like to be a Black Girl”. Finding out whether the characters are the same, if the setting is different between the two, if the theme told outright or did one have to “think outside of the box” to determine its meaning will lead to what content the two have. If one literary work is a ballad or a play, if one is longer or shorter than the other one, if the tone is the same between the two works, if the language differs between the two works or if it is the same, and whether one works using metaphors, while the other uses similes, will give a person clues as to what the short story and the poem have as far as form, and style.…

If we were to go out on the streets today and ask “what is the difference between race and ethnicity?”, most people would probably answer “I don’t know” or “ They are the same thing”. One of the most confused concepts of defining one another is the distinguishing of race and ethnicity. In the past, people either thought one was the other or there was simply no difference. Labeling people in the world is often done without proper knowledge and can lead to making a false accusation or offending someone. Race is associated with one’s biological ancestors, such as your physical appearance. While ethnicity is the identity with people who share similar cultural tradition.…

From chapter four, I learned that being a therapist, I have to think a lot before I speak and give advice to clients. Doing this will prevent me from making a client uncomfortable. Another thing the book stated which made me think a lot is the comment about race. It said that race is a social construct, not a scientific or biological fact. It was interesting learning about how race developed into a hierarchically issue. Race and ethnicity are different things and people do not realize the differences between the two.…
