Example: Bone Compression
In a circus act, a performer supports the combined weight (1080 N) of a number of colleagues. Each thighbone of this performer has a length of 0.55 m and an effective cross sectional area of 7.7×10-4 m2. Determine the amount that each thighbone compresses under the extra weight.

Stress, Strain, and Hooke’s Law

In general the quantity F/A is called the stress.

The change in the quantity divided by that quantity is called the strain: V Vo L Lo x Lo

HOOKE’S LAW FOR STRESS AND STRAIN
Stress is directly proportional to strain.
Strain is a unitless quantitiy.
SI Unit of Stress: N/m2

Haydn was a remarkable composer, epitomizing the meaning of classical period composition, and though he wasn't as flashy as the younger Mozart, his music always stayed true to form. Haydn, unlike most composers, had a "reliable and steady" job composing, directing, teaching, performing, and managing musicians from the royal Esterhazy family. During this time, Haydn composed many pieces of music for the courtly orchestra to perform. With a staggering body of work, including over 100 symphonies and 60 string quartets, he is often referred to as the "Father of the Symphony" or "Father of the String Quartet."…

Jane McGonigal’s “Games For Change Keynote” lecture is about how much of an influence games have on society and the impact it can bring. Her two main questions to answer during this lecture are “What can games change?” and “What do games change?” McGonigal presents a list of some people’s twitter responses to what games do for them. The first few responses refer to ones emotional state. People with initial negative emotions such as sadness and anxiety can play games and end up feeling much better. Another change she presents is “mental resilience”. This refers to a person’s mindset and how it is altered with games. It is possible for people’s confidence and performance levels to increase after some time playing games. The next thing McGonigal talks about is “social resilience”. How people socialize and interact with the people around them can change with game play as well. For example, many of the games in the present day are multiplayer and present an option to connect with players around the world. This creates socializing and interacting with other online players who may even be real life friends. Before she talks about the science and data behind her lecture she gives us a list of how we can measure these changes when playing games. The list includes analyzing emotional, mental, neurological, social, self-efficacy, and engagement levels. In more general terms, McGonigal believes that “games can change your life.”…

Failure is not something an individual can avoid. We all make mistakes because we are imperfect. Thus, we need to look at ways that help us overcome a situation we had failed at. According to “Rich in Thought: Not every Olympian Gets a Medal” by Richard Paloma, he states,” Mistakes are tools for learning- not indicators of poor ability” (paragraph 7). Whether it’s losing a soccer game, failing a test, or coming last in a race we all have failures. Three ways that I have made a mistake, but learned from it are failure’s on a school history final, the loss of my soccer game, and stealing from Target.…
