Music has played a major role throughout the evolution of human kind. It has been around since the days of cavemen who discovered the effects of banging rocks and sticks in a rhythm. Through the years music has been used as a medium for expression of thoughts, feelings, and ideas. The lyrics of the song are usually the easiest and least complex way of expressing these feelings. There are more subtle ways that are often overlooked though. These are the tone of voice, tempo of the music, the instruments used, hidden meanings or metaphors, and the overall way the song sounds. A good example of this is the song Kiss My Irish Ass by Frank Mackey and the Keltic Cowboys.…

A song’s cheerful and upbeat structure can greatly contrast the message a song attempts to convey. Take Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” for example. “Variations on a Cloud” shares the same makeup. Both songs portray a disaster hidden behind a façade of well-being, usually hiding right under our noses. ミラクルミュージカル (Miracle Musical) has done just that, only more head-on.…

I agree with Morgan’s claims because writing and singing are outlets for people to express their emotions and issues. I feel that lyrics all have a deeper meaning and purpose to them than just the actual words being said. Morgan makes valid points and explains and addresses…

Music can be more than just something to dance or sing along to. It is also a form of art and a way for people to let their feelings out in a different way. Many people write music to express any sort of feeling, such as happiness, anger, and depression. By putting out their music they can connect to their fans, friends, and family in a way that is easier for them and everyone can find a way to relate to them. The songs “From Dog to God” by Prayers, “Undercover Martyn” by Two Door Cinema Club, and “Hey You” by Pink Floyd all express the effects of isolation and how it gets in the way of their lives.…

It's strange how sad I feel days after Chris Cornell passed away. As if I knew him on a personally level. That's the power of music, the impact it has on our soul, our lives. It's the connection, it's the voice we couldn't find, the comfort we could rely on. Life's reverb, Always a constant, a song for every occasion. Weather it be a dark time when we needed comfort, perspective. It was our friend when friends couldn't be found. But mostly, a celebration when we feel most alive. When we want to turn up, laugh, dance and flat out fucking rock! That's music. Think I know how people felt when Elvis died.…

I think a lot of times we don't really listen to the music and don't appreciate the true or full meaning behind a piece. I know I am guilty of not really listening to the music's meaning. Many times I use music to change my mood. I can be bummed out about cleaning my room so I throw on some "happy" music to change my mood. I use music as a crutch instead of a learning experience. I often also find myself listening to the words in the song, but it is not always the lyrics that give the meaning to a song. There can be a song with no words and still give a sense of emotion and meaning through the notes or pace. After reading this essay I put on a couple of the songs by the composers Aaron Copland mentions in this essay. I tried to really listen to all three planes instead of listening to the music instinctively. This is something I have done before back in music class or when I took music lessons, but I forgot how beautiful music really is. Today many young adults, like us in highschool, no longer listen to music that has no lyrics. It is really a different feeling to listen to the melody or rhythm of the song then the crazy lyrics of the songs we listen to today. I think we still like music for the same reasons Copland discusses in his essay, but now the words in the songs play a bigger role in whether or not we listen to it. I think after reading this essay we can all learn to appreciate the meaning to…

Music is used to help people of every ethnicity, religion, and lifestyle, cope with different struggles, times of enjoyment, and life itself. But, what is it about music that makes it so therapeutic? It’s the fact that no matter what the genre of music is, it’s what message that artist is putting out into the world. It’s the beat, the tone, and the emotion behind the lyrics is what makes listeners feel the way they do because it speaks on a specific aspect of life and what someone can be going through.…

Imagine sitting in the backseat of a car and listening to Smokey Robinson’s, “Ooo Baby Baby.” This song took the mood over; he was now from a tense eye-twitching frown to a teary-eyed smile. He knew this was the song I listened to when I was happy, sad or just wanted to listen to something to help me sleep. In fact, this is the…

Many artist have different ways of expressing themselves to listeners. From elaborate live performances to on-camera interviews, artist and musicians alike always had a unique sense of showmanship. They all however share a quality that is the very essence of music, delivering a message through their lyrical content. Lyrics to me, and I assume the majority of people, represent a great deal of importance. Lyrical content especially in today’s society shares a connection with the artist and audience. It brings the audience into their world, and at times you can sense the many hardships portrayed. People nowadays listen carefully into content put out, paying close attention to words and making judgements. It’s as if everyone's a critic, deciding…

Some of the most powerful and meaningful messages are found in music. It doesn’t matter if it’s acapella, an orchestra, or a four man band where everyone sings and plays an instrument; each of these styles send out a message. It may lie strictly in the lyrics. If not in within the words, the meaning could be behind or found inside the actual notes and rhythm of the song. Throughout time artists have reflected their own views, experiences, lifestyles, and emotions through song. Many artists have dug even deeper and wrote about how society acts as a whole and what is happening throughout the world. Sadly, many people do not pay attention to the lyrics and feel the emotion behind the artist’s strong words. The music is only heard but not “seen with both eyes.” Very few stop and ask, “What is this person (or group) trying to say?” Particularly, the group Nickelback does a great job of analyzing society’s atmosphere and writing about what is happening. A popular song by Nickelback, “When We Stand Together,” discusses what citizens are missing, how to potentially fix the issues and addresses why the issues are important.…

When thinking about musical taste, it is easy to point out the flaws and elements of a song that make you classify it as “bad music.” But it is often more difficult to pinpoint exactly why you love a song. There is something fascinating about the way in which a song is simultaneously loved by some listeners and hated by others. Although the song certainly has as many critics as it does fans, to this day, “Empire State of Mind” by Jay Z featuring Alicia Keys remains one of my favorite songs. Through the ideas of music critics Simon Frith and Carl Wilson, I can more clearly articulate why I love “Empire State of Mind” in a nuanced way.…
