The meaning behind Theodore Roosevelt’s quote is to not only overcome adversity, but win while doing so. One can’t just have the tools to be great, they have to use them. Those that use these tools are the ones that truly achieve greatness. The Roman poet Horace explained that “adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” Most everyone knows the difference between right and wrong, and when one is not in a situation that immediately demands such a decision it seems easy to make the right choice. To actually do the right thing, when the time calls for it, is a much more difficult. Basically Roosevelt is trying to say that one can win a million times, but if one defeat can cause them to never try again, then the past million times mean nothing. To rise after falling 1000 times and then winning, that is truly overcoming adversity and achieving greatness.…

This quote is significant to a wide variety of people for the mere fact that everyone goes through this. I think that at one point or another, most people will realize goals are meant to be set high rather than low. I also believe people often experience this danger through becoming lazy. The human race is much too powerful to be unproductive. If we set our aim too low, we become incapable of reaching our goals. True satisfaction comes from hard work and morals. An example of this comes from literature. It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini, tells the hardships of a young man who becomes suicidal and checks himself into a psychiatric hospital. The young man, Craig was at his deepest set of depression when he had no motivation. However, when Craig stayed positive with his goals set high; he overcame depression. Another example comes from a film called "Rudy." When Rudy experiences pain and hardships he refuses to be let down. As Rudy reaches for a goal most believe to be out of his reach, he does his best and proves them wrong. From history, we learn that Rosa Parks was a woman who embodied this quote. It was the year 1955 in Alabama, when Parks refused to obey a bus driver's order that she give up her seat and make room for a white passenger. Her action showed she had something to prove, and she was not going to be pushed around anymore.…
