Rhetorical Modes Quiz
Complete the following chart to identify the purpose and structure of the various rhetorical modes used in academic writing. Provide at least two tips for writing each type of rhetorical device.

Narration
A method of informing that explains something by recounting events.

Description
A rhetorical mode based in the five sense. It aims to recreate, invent, or present something so that the reader can experience it.
The organization method used for a descriptive essay is spatial order
Classification
Assignments of an object or people to categories on the basis of shared characteristics.
A classification essay is organized by the subtopics
Process analysis
A method of paragraph or essay development by which a writer explains step by step how something is done or how to do something.
Definition
A method of informing that explains something by identifying the meaning.
Comparison and contrast
The identification of similarities and differences.
Cause and effect
A relationship in which changes in the one variable causes change in another.
Persuasion
The power to induce the taking of a course of action or the embracing of a point of view by means of argument or treaty.

Write a 150- to 200-word paragraph to explain the importance of purpose, audience, tone, and content in academic writing. Use the three components of a good paragraph covered in Week 2.
Underline your topic sentence.
Boldface your concluding sentence in the paragraph.
Use complete sentences, correct subject–verb agreement, and consistent verb tense in your paragraph.
