Quench Water Bottles: A Short Story
I looked out the window of my office, gazing at the great city of Chicago spread out before me. I had risen quickly through the ranks of Quench Water Bottles, and now occupied the position of assistant CEO. That was pretty good, for only 24. I looked down at my computer screen. An email had just come in from the CEO, Jackson Swoland. I opened it. “Report to my office immediately. Urgent.- Jackson Swoland” I jumped up and headed out the door. I knocked my fist against the hard wooden door of the CEO’s office. My knock was answered immediately by a voice I recognized as Jackson Swoland’s. “Come in.”
I opened the door and walked in. I scanned the office and saw that I was not the only one who had been called in. Sitting in

Apparently, I was not the only one who had thought that this was just a routine check on the company’s statistics.
“The government has recently contacted me on a matter of importance,” Swoland said. He had everyone’s rapt attention now. If the government was getting involved, this had to be big.
“As you may know, the world has been dealing with the problems involved with over population for some time now. The government had asked us to help them… Well… keep it under control.” The CEO fidgeted nervously while he said this. I saw looks of confusion on people's’ faces over the room. ‘What was he getting at?’ I thought.
“In other words,” Swoland continued, see the confused faces, “The government has asked us to poison some of our water bottles to keep the population down.” The CEO stated bluntly. ‘What?! How can he even think of murdering all those people?” I thought, thoroughly horrified by the suggestion.
“They want us to kill innocent people? How can we even consider doing that?” A young head of office burst out, his passion evident on his fiery face. “That’s despicable.” Swoland looked at him with

I looked at the clock. It was only 8:00. I still had 5 hours left. I went into my black and white themed bedroom and set my phone alarm for 12:25. That would give me enough time to get all my things in order and drive the 15 minutes to the factory. I should arrive there right on time. I looked around my bedroom, suddenly resenting the lack of comforting colors. I have to admit, I was scared. I was starting the most important night of my life. Who wouldn’t be a little freaked out? With that thought in my head, I lay down, trying to get a little rest before I went and blew stuff

One of the last places in the world one would expect to find a battle over water is Michigan. Michigan, who once displayed “Water Wonderland” on its license plates, features more than 11,000 lakes and 36,000 miles of streams and one is never more than six miles from enjoying any one of them (Michigan Outdoors). Why then has a dispute over water rights escalated into several lawsuits? The purpose of this paper is to analyze the water rights case of Nestle versus Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation (MCWC) from the perspective of the libertarian, utilitarian, and Rawlsian theories of justice.…

Increasing the size of the population is generally held to be a good thing, but an even larger proportion of the world’s people is becoming convinced that the world is already overpopulated” (Hardin, 42). Increasing the population not only limits resources, it also increases the amount of misunderstanding to people “never do[ing] one thing”, which can potentially lead to a larger ecological crisis. There are many problems when it comes to population. Technology is expensive and with population growing, the price of natural resources is increasing as well. There are solutions to this issue though, but cannot be implemented right away. Hardin looks “toward voluntarism and persuasion to help create a climate of opinion that can some day support stronger measures” (Hardin, 45). By “doing the right thing”, Hardin rhetorically persuades the readers to engage in thoughtful actions that decreases the population. The first step to this solution is to create a 100% effective birth control. Society knows that contraception is not completely effective, but because of this, Hardin suggests we create a system for acceptability towards abortions if necessary. If birth control fails, abortions should be included as a “back up plan” with the cost of being preferably free. The problem with this proposal is that abortions are frowned upon in other countries. To avoid the abortion issue, young girls need to be taught to become…

“Okay,” agreed Harold, “if you say so.” He resumed his dialogue with the two emissaries. “Then in that case,” he told the Underground member, “Tell your superiors that I extend my hand to them.” He then turned to the other one. “And please inform Bauer Industries that my family’s ties are still strong.” Standing upright, he held out his hand to them. “I look forward to working with both…

I was so tired, even attempting to keep my eyes open was a struggle. My whole body was achy after a hard day’s of school work, constantly staring at a computer screen and typing away, just to finish an essay. My pale white hands, frozen by the air conditioning blasting on high, were holding on to the steering wheel like a person gripping the edge of a cliff, hoping not to fall into a dark abyss. My brain wanted to give in, to remain in the sleep that I kept dangerously drifting in and out of. I took a look outside, the road looking meek. The rows if brush hoars any objects spattered off the road by vehicles in the August sun. It felt like I was going around in a circle, my tires skating around the bends and turns of the road. I felt maybe I should slow down so I do not lose…

I push the door open. The bell tinkles, with a soft but shrill ring. A wave of rubber gloves and disinfectant masked with cheap air freshener washes over me. Chairs are cluttered in the waiting room of the dentists. Clusters of magazines lie on the scratched wood of the coffee tables, shiny bright plastic screaming out logos and slogans. A little way forward from where I stand is a desk. A smiling receptionist sits there. She seems to have been expecting me somehow, as she indicates to the couches and chairs.…

Within the Utilitarian theory, in the eyes of the Nestle Company, their actions can be deemed ethical for the fact that the bottling plant has created a substantial amount of jobs for the locals. It was stated that the 262 million gallons of water being pumped are less than one percent of the annual recharge rate of the local watershed. The sacrifice of a small percentage of the public body of water to create jobs and bottled water is ethical within the utilitarian theory.…
