Catherine the Great, was Empress of Russia. ''Catherine was considered an ''enlightened despot'' who ruled with nearly absolute power, employing the latest philosophical and scientific thinking to improve the lives of her subjects'' (Kishlansky 67). It describes the way she was Queen. As the Queen she achieves the modernization of Russia by reforming the legal code, educational system, and becoming a great patron of art, music and theater.
