To fully understand James chapter four, it is important to understand who the author James was. According to Kenneth Mackenzie, D.D. “James must have been of authority in the infant Church. He is the presiding officer at the momentous council in Jerusalem (Acts 15)… [Paul] admits the evident leadership of James in Gal. 2:12.” (Mackenzie, 1939.…

In his clarification of the nature of psychological problems and mental illness, Anderson (2000) places a high emphasis on spiritual warfare; reminding the reader, “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds” (2 Corinthians 10:4, KJV). Anderson provides many examples of counselees whom he believes have succumbed to the deceptive tricks of Satan, explaining what may have been diagnosed as mental illness is actually spiritual oppression; or in cases of non-Christians, actual demon possession (Anderson, 2000). By drawing attention to scripture in Paul’s letter to Timothy, Anderson illustrates his point: “But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons” (I Timothy 4:1, NASB). Thankfully, Anderson (2000) provides a detailed method of obtaining daily victory over the spiritual forces of darkness by outlining what Hawkins (2010) would refer to as a method of “discipleship counseling” – the seven steps to freedom in Christ. The freedom and protection which is afforded by the Christian is stressed, as well as the position of authority Christians have over the enemy. Freedom is accomplished by taking the first step of…

The New Testament was written mostly by the Apostle Paul. Paul wrote thirteen books/letters and he was one of the authors of Hebrews. Paul’s letters taught on how to live a Christian and godly life. But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. Galatians 5:16-17 (NASB). There will always be this life-long battle that will be waged over our lives. A quote from a recent Boxing movie goes like this, standing looking into a mirror; “You see this guy here? That's the toughest opponent you're ever going to have to face. I believe that's true in the ring, and I think that's true in life.” You’ll confront many other battles in your lineup at some point in your life to fight. But this one, this one you’ll grapple with…

'I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false; and you have perseverance and have endured for My name's sake, and have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you and will remove your lampstand out of its place--unless you repent. Yet this you do have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 'He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God.' –Revelation 2…

We see it with the two verbs: being drunk with wine which leads to debauchery, but being filled with the Spirit, which leads to joy in fellowship and obedience to the commandments of the Lord’s will (Hoehner, 702). Just like those who become drunk with wine, those who are filled with the Spirit can no longer control their actions. Those who have the spirit give up their own will to the Lord. Those who walk and are filled with the Spirit, then the Spirit of God is directed and empowers the believer to live their life in a way that is pleasing to God and also to his will. “Believers are commanded to be filled by the Spirit so that they will understand the will of the Lord and allow God’s control of their lives, thus providing enablement to make the most of every opportunity rather than succumbing to the desires of the flesh” (Hoehner, 705). Believers should not only walk wisely, but be filled with the Spirit. All of these are very beneficial to the believers and are pleasing to…

The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are enumerated in Isaiah 11:2-3. They are present in their fullness in Jesus Christ but are found in all Christians who are in a state of grace. We receive them when we are infused with sanctifying grace which we receive twice, once during baptism, and once during confirmation. I chose this topic because the Holy Spirit lives inside us and guides the actions of those who desire His presence. The Holy Spirit empowers the believer to step outside his comfort zone to do extraordinary acts of faith for God. Being filled with the Spirit involves transforming our minds to the mind of Christ as we engage in spiritual activities. walking in the guidance of the Holy Spirit leads to a sense of peace and joy, as we partner with God in His glorious plans. Violating our conscience through acts of disobedience lead to a loss of filling by the Holy Spirit, which takes away our joy and peace. Although God will not take the Holy Spirit away from a disciple of Jesus Christ, the continual practice of sin and a lack of spiritual activities will lead to a life that is no different than the life of a non-believer. Blasphemy against any other member of the Holy Trinity can be forgiven, although blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. The Holy Spirit empowers the believer to perform acts of faith greater than their own physical capabilities. Through understanding this, I have learned that…

We know, then, that the indwelling Spirit wars against the desires of our flesh. What is the desire of the Spirit? It is the desire of the Holy Spirit to produce, or bring forth, fruits of righteousness in us as a result of His presence. He desires to truly transform us from the inside out.…
