1. What approach do you recommend for addressing the F100 reliability issues?

1) Do the data analysis every month to trace how it works
2) Compare current year ratio of accidents to last few years
3) Once there’s an accident, analyze how to improve F100 to avoid accidents
4) Maintain the original standards in order to meet the production deadlines
5) Use better quality components that can resist wear and tear at high temperatures/altitudes
6) Follow overhauling schedule strictly – 100 hours of operation for F15 and 50 hours of operation for F16
7) Do not skip component-by-component testing in order to speed up the testing process (may have also kept Navy from slashing production targets)
8) Dual source-engine from GE and fan/compressor from Pratt and Whitney

2. Under what conditions will sourcing from a second supplier will or will not make the F100 jet engine more reliable?

More reliable
1) Both sides reach agreement and work in unison on dual-sourced engine
2) Maintenance infrastructure is created for the dual-sourced engine
3) Each company is sourced to compete and create the more reliable engine. The firm with the better engine will win the contract. Reliability may be a direct result of increased competition.

Not more reliable
1) Both companies are not willing to take partial contracts and work together.
2) The testing standards are different from one supplier to the other causing the final products to be unreliable

In 1985, Bridgeton Industries, a major supplier to Big-Three domestic automobile manufacturers, is facing a competitive environment with advent of foreign competition and rising gasoline prices, leading to shrinking pool of production contracts. Bridgeton reacts by closing ACF diesel engine plant and hiring strategic consulting firm to classify their products on competitive position. Based on analysis, Bridgeton outsourced oil pans and muffler exhaust (classified as Class 3) and introduced programs, such as lowering time required to change dies, to improve product, quality and productivity. However, despite of these measures, manifolds were downgraded from Class II to Class III in 1990 model year budget. Now, Bridgeton faces the challenge to decide if manifolds be outsourced and, more importantly, what more to do (in terms of strategy) to keep the business?…
