Purpose Of The DMU Case Study

Analysis
For my second IPE event, I attended the DMU Case Study. There were many students from different schools that participated. DMU students, Drake Pharmacy, DMACC nursing, and Grand View nursing were among the schools that participated in the case study. This time I was more familiar of how students of different professions interacted with one another. The purpose of the DMU Case Study is to bring together different health profession and share ideas that can be helpful in providing care for the patient in a realistic scenario. The case study that we were given, is based off something that we as healthcare professionals can potentially experience in the future when caring for our patients. Several months had passed since the last time the patient has seen a doctor. The patient has many complications in his health history such as a very poor diet, history of heart disease, and unknown glucose and A1C levels. With the additional information we were provided, we were able to note that he did have an infection due to his vitals and lab values. The vitals and blood labs that indicate a possible infection were all elevated. We were able to make made the connections of how the smell of the foot, abscess drainage, and elevated vitals and lab values were evidence of an infection. The patient in this case study, is a patient that we could encounter in the future. Many patients are unaware of how to take care of their health and in this case, collaborating with a team is important in order to assure the best care that can be provided for the patient. The pharmacy student was knowledgeable about the medication that would be most appropriate for the patient. The podiatric student shared his knowledge of what would be the next steps in the treatment of the patient’s foot. Collaborating with students from other schools and in different professions is a great way in improving communication skills with other team members. Through this experience at DMU, the one thing that surprised me was how respectful everyone was with each other when sharing our opinions about the case study. It wasn’t that I didn’t expect people to be respectful, it’s the fact that each member was appreciative of the different ideas that were shared. The first thing that I learned from this, is that it’s important to stay open-minded about different ideas shared in a team. Second, don’t be afraid to share an idea because it can potentially be an important idea that can support a patient’s care. Lastly, I would take way with me that it is important to ask questions whenever you’re not sure of something; someone else may have the answer to the question. My attitudes about collaborating with other health care professionals have stayed positive and the
