Puerto Rico: A Short Story
A sour smell drifted through the streets. Not very pleasant to one's sense of smell. Skyscrapers stood tall as if they've been there for millennials. I've been in New York City for two years now living in the projects with my brother and his gang. We came here from Puerto Rico to start a new life and for new opportunities. It's been nothing but trouble. Tigers against eagles, whites against Puerto Ricans. My brother is the leader of the gang. Trying to make a name for himself, claiming territory like he runs the place. The cops are corrupt and unfair. Gang members are beaten senseless without reason and the innocent are thrown in jail for false accusations.
Today I'm going to a dance that I'm not so sure about. It'll seem sketchy being surrounded

In this wonderful exploration of life in the South Bronx and Harlem— the ghetto of New York City—Kozol poises the question “How does a nation deal with those whom it has cursed?” He delves into the bleak circumstances of the residents, the shocking inequalities between the resources and facilities available to black and Hispanic families who live past the demarcation line, 96th Street, and the their white counterparts in Manhattan and other boroughs, and complacency that keeps things the way they are.…

The legend of the Chupacabra begins in March, 1995 in Puerto Rico and since its initial report there have been multiple sightings worldwide, the majority being in Latin America but also including: The Philippines, Russia, China, Thailand, and even lower parts of the US like Texas and Florida. The chupacabra’s name is derived from spanish and most literally means “goat sucker”. Chupar meaning “to suck” and cabra meaning “goat”. The Chupacabra received its name because of the method in which it kills its prey, by draining all the blood from the victim and leaving the carcass behind, leaving no evidence that the Chupacabra intended on actually eating the victim . Every documented case of the Chupacabra has these similar characteristics.…

The Movie Gangs of New York, released in 2002, gives insight into the violence, corruption, and disarray that occurred in The Five Points of Manhattan during the 19th century, and reveals one of the biggest skeletons in New York’s closet. Martin Scorsese’s translation of the events in the film proves to be very intriguing, and for the most part accurate. However, there are a few aspects of the film he did not correctly portray: the timing of events, and the scale of the events that occurred.…

A hurricane is one of the extreme natural events that can destroy a country rapidly. In a month, Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico were hit by extremely destructive hurricanes. The island of Puerto Rico was hit by Hurricane Maria last September 20, 2017, and it left the whole island in a total destruction. Hurricane Maria stunned Puerto Ricans because of it “crushed concrete balconies, crippled the island with landslides and flooding, that resulted to no power and telecommunication services in the whole island” (Coto 23). The Puerto Rico leaders sought help from the United States’ president as soon as Hurricane Maria was still in Puerto Rico. In Peter Baker and Caitlin Dickerson’s article entitled “Trump warn storm-ravaged Puerto Rico that aid won’t last forever”, my authors argue that President Donald Trump was losing patience in the island’s situation and that the federal government will not stay forever in Puerto Rico (Baker,…

Puerto Rico, an island situated between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, lies just east of the Dominican Republic. With an area of 9,104 square kilometers (3,515 square miles), Puerto Rico is almost 3 times the size of the state of Rhode Island. As an island commonwealth with a coastline of 501 kilometers (311 miles), Puerto Rico shares no borders with other nations. San Juan, the capital, is located on the northeastern shore of the main island; there are also 3 small islands included in the Commonwealth: Vieques and Culebra to the east and Mona to the west. San Juan's location makes it one of the Caribbean Sea's most valuable ports. The Mona Passage, off Puerto Rico's west shore, is also a crucial shipping route to the Panama Canal. Major cities include Guánica, Playa de Ponce, and Guayanilla, all 3 along the southern coast, in east-to-west order. Puerto Rico's most important cities are port cities, vital to the Puerto Rican economy.…

Living on a college campus next year will broaden my exposure to diversity even more.
