Counselling and psychotherapy are very different areas of speciality than psychiatry or psychology. Yet it is from these two health practices that counselling and psychotherapy practice emerged. The emergence and beginning of this takes us back initially to 1887, when the specialism of psychotherapy emerged in psychiatry. In the nineteenth century there was a general shift towards science and capitalism, and away from religion, this impacted on peoples understanding and tolerance towards distress and mental ill health. In the early twentieth century Sigmund Freud founded/developed psychoanalysis. Around the time of the 2nd World War a number of well regarded psychoanalysts split off from Freud, and moved elsewhere, around the world, such as the UK, USA and Europe.…
As the world has progressed over the past thousands of years, many events and people have had an impact on where the world is today along with many other factors. Some of these factors are the drinks that have defined periods of humanity, yet they are often overlooked and go unnoticed in a typical classroom textbook. Many beverages have come into existence by mankind by accident and on purpose, but six specific types of drinks have left an imprint on the world: beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and Coca-Cola. When these six beverages were discovered, the people of those times did not know the path it would lead the world down. Through the words of author Tom Standage in his book A History of the World in 6 Glasses, the reader is informed of…

When an individual is in a situation and needs to seek help in their lives, whether it be for family problems or something they are working on as an individual, they often turn to a professional to get insight and help to fix things that may have gone wrong by means of some sort of therapy. When this occurs that individual then enters into a Clinician-Client relationship. The way that this relationship between the Clinician and Client is formed is critical to the outcome of therapy for that individual.…
Clinical psychology is a broad ranged profession but the main focus is based on assessment, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. Two interviews were obtained so that a comparison can be made between a clinical psychologist and a clinical therapist and the roles both professionals play in mental health. Some special areas are child, adult mental health, substance abuse, and abnormal emotional disturbances (Cherry, 2013). Therapists are just as important in the treatment of clients. The role in which a therapist plays is counseling one person or a group mostly in psychological or emotional issue. A clinical therapist uses tools to obtain information, such as a questionnaire. It is used to…

This is not an idle question without real-world consequences. The "treatment" of every single "mental disorder" that mental health professionals "diagnose," from "depression" and "attention deficitdisorder" on through "schizophrenia," flows from how society construes "normal" and "abnormal." This matter affects tens of millions of people annually; and affects everyone, really, since a person's mental model of "what is normal?" is tremendously influenced by how society and its institutions define "normal."…
Individuals that reach out for some form of therapy tend to view the therapist as an all knowing expert. Some individuals have realized that they no longer have the resources nor the ability to move forth with a self-evaluating or self-counseling within their frame and do not trust that they are competent and capable to regain control and move their distress to a more acceptable normalized view of functioning. By attending therapy and the therapist encouraging the client-as-expert mentality, a client could be overwhelmed with anxiety and low level of self competence to continue with the therapy process. Also, a client that is made to attend counseling for some reason, may exhibit that they believe nothing is wrong to have to be a part of therapy. With the client taking this position and remaining an expert, could result in no attainable knowledge or desire to complete therapy with the intentions of changing for the better or making better life…
In our society there are several forms of behavioral and social development concerns. To help people cope with these psychological concerns there are a wide range of therapies, techniques and approaches, such as psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is a systematic interaction between a therapist and someone who is suffering from mental or emotional issues, with the goal of providing support or relief to overcome their psychological disorder (Rathus, 2012). There are several therapeutic methods that can be used by therapists, but ultimately the situation and the client will dictate which one is appropriate. Psychoanalytic therapy, Humanistic therapy, Behavior therapy, Cognitive therapy, Group therapy, and Biological therapy are all effective therapeutic methods of helping clients cope with their psychological disorder.…
How does Critical Thinking and Ethics affect Therapeutic Communication in the Treatment of Mental Health Patients?…
In the 1930s, mentally ill individuals were treated harsh forms of therapy and drugs. In modern day, the mentally ill are being treated with safer forms of therapy and more efficient forms of prescription medicine. For example, the mentally ill now have many different choices of therapy, such as psychotherapy, medication, hospitalization, support groups, and peer support. Psychotherapy is a form of therapy in which individuals talk with a psychologist that help them express their feelings and find ways in which they can learn how to deal with how they act, thoughts, symptoms, stresses, and goals. In addition to this, individuals may consider seeing a psychiatrist to be given prescription drugs for their illness that help manage symptoms. They may also consider admitting themselves into a hospital to have close watch over them, and receive the proper care they need (“Mental Health Treatments”). Lastly, they may also consider seeking the help of support groups and the support of other peers. An example of this would be support groups across the United States, such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Both of these support groups meet with different individuals that are experiencing the same feelings as each other, and come up with ways to aid in their journey to getting better (Carney). The various options of therapy that a…
Research has shown that there is little evidence for the superiority of one school over another (Assay and Lambert, 1999). It is the similarities rather than the differences that account for the observation that all psychotherapeutic approaches are effective (in general). These similarities can be combined into four factors that are common to all forms of psychotherapy. These four factors include: technique (15%), extratherapeutic change (40%), therapeutic relationship (30%) and hope or expectancy (15%). Wampold (2010) further strengthened the argument that psychotherapy is an effective intervention nut that no one theory has been proven to be more effective over all of the others.…
Critical thinking is making reasonable judgements that are logical and well thought-out which requires supporting evidence that in turn improves the thinkers objectivity and creates the ability to explore alternatives. Joseph Walsh (2000) stresses that as social workers the ability to engage in critical thinking is essential for social workers because theory's and intervention strategies includes a dependence of claims that cannot be proven true or false (p. 10). The ability in thinking critically allows social workers to challenge their decisions in deciding what one or several theories will serve their clients.…
