Psychoanalytical Approach to the story the Cask of Amontillado
"Being entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise “Sigmund Freud once said this and it is the foundation for his theories explaining about psychoanalysis. His theory simply explains that people becomes the product of their experiences. In Edgar Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" the behavior that one of the characters possesses an extremely high sense of vengeance, this could be a reflection of himself because according to psychoanalytic interpretation, the author's own life can possibly be traceable within the behavior of the characters in the literary work. From the beginning of "The Cask of Amontillado", we felt Montresor had some psychological issues and insecurities that at times made him jealous of Fortunato that's why Montresor felt murdering Fortunato was only the solution to satisfy his desire to become Fortunato. In psychoanalytic criticism, there are three competing forces according to Freud Id, Ego and Superego. The Id of Montresor which represents his desire to become Fortunato made him weaved a dark plan to revenge to satisfy himself. In other way, Montresor's id overcame his ego and superego. In the story, the reader could hardly interpret the reason why Montresor is mad at Fortunato. It just jumped at the part where Fortunato insulted him in someways. He remarked "the thousands injuries of Fortunato, had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge". The fact that he had got triggered because of an insult showed Montresor he was insecure and for us thos gave us the instinct that Montresor doesn't want anyone to criticize him. Montresor had a bitter hatred toward Fotunato which he enacted through his plan not only kill Fortunato but also tortured him by prolonging his death. Montresor's desire of revenge can be used to reveal characteristics about him that he does not want to admit.
