Abstract:
There seems to always be a connection between unethical behaviour and money, leading to the idea that money corrupts. Gino and Mogilner’s (2013) in their recent study looked into a new way of counteracting the possible undesirable effects money has on people. Across four experiments they found that by triggering thoughts of time and in turn self-reflection rather than money, individuals were more inclined to cheat less and behave more ethically. The effect of money as a corrupting factor is recognised (Festinger & Carlsmith 1959) and expressed in the Gino and Mogilner study and the links between money, time and morality clearly layed out. Gino and Mogilner’s findings that by priming time, higher levels of self-reflection are triggered and money primes create lower levels of self-reflection, propose important applications in offsetting the adverse effects of monetary influence.

Our society has an obsession with spending, buying and accumulating money, and research into the possible connection of money and corruption is continuously ongoing. Despite the numerous studies on money and its involvement with unethical behaviour, Gino and Mogilner (2013) directed a new focus, examining a way to offset the negative effect of money with an emphasis on the resource of time and in that, self-reflection. Gino and Mogilner primed, a subliminal memory effect where they exposed participants to the concepts of time or money in order to see how either would influence their response to the experiments. Gino and Mogilner (2013) found that by simply thinking of the concept of time, over money, pushed people to cheat less leading to higher moral value and that reduced cheating as a result to priming time was due to time having the effect of encouraging self reflection. However in light of other research the importance of Gino and Mogilner’s conclusion that recommending people to reflect on time rather than money as an effective method of reducing dishonesty

    The research study was conducted at the University of Washington, the London Business School, Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania. The title: “The Cheater’s High: The Unexpected Affective Benefits of Unethical Behavior.” The abstract of that study states that if an unethical behavior does not seem to inflict harm on a real person, the cheater does not feel guilty or ashamed. Across six experiments, the experimenters find that although people expect to experience negative affect after over-reporting their performance on cognitive tasks, they actually experience a boost in positive affect. These findings challenge existing models of ethical decision making and offer cause for concern.     Abstract Many scholars, business people, policy makers, and religious leaders are suspicious of self-interest and incentives and often oppose the use of incentives to motivate managers, employees, public servants, or the public itself. I address here some of these issues regarding human nature and organizations raised by Michael Brennan (1994) in “Incentives, Rationality, and Society.” I analyze the meaning and role of incentives in the logic of choice and argue that it is inconceivable that purposeful actions can be viewed as anything other than responses to incentives. Money is not always the best way to motivate people. But where money incentives are required, they are required precisely because people are motivated by things other than money. Self-interest does not mean that people have no altruistic motives. And altruism, the concern for the well-being of others, does not make a person a perfect agent who does the bidding of others. This means that agency problems cannot be solved by instilling greater altruism in people (even if we could do so). I also discuss the universal tendency of people to behave in non-rational ways. Though they are Resourceful, Evaluative Maximizers (the REMM model) humans are imperfect in the sense that they have inherited a brain that is biologically structured so as to blind them from perceiving and correcting certain types of errors, primarily those that cause emotional or psychic pain. The result is systematic, non-functional behavior that makes them worse off. I briefly discuss a Pain Avoidance Model (PAM) that complements REMM by capturing the non-rational component of human behavior. This non-rational, behavior is the crux of self-control problems that beset all humans.     Research on ethical decision making has been heavily influenced by normative decision theories that view intelligent choices as involving conscious deliberation and analysis. Recent developments in moral psychology, however, suggest that moral functions involved in ethical decision making are metaphorical and embodied. The research presented here suggests that deliberative decision making may actually increase unethical behaviors and reduce altruistic motives when it overshadows implicit, intuitive influences on moral judgments and decisions. Three lab experiments explored the potential ethical dangers of deliberative decision making. Experiments 1 and 2 showed that deliberative decision making, activated by a math problem-solving task or by simply framing the choice as a decision rather than an intuitive reaction, increased deception in a one-shot deception game. Experiment 3—which activated systematic thinking or intuitive feeling about the choice to donate to a charity—found that deliberative decision making could also decrease altruism. These findings highlight the potential ethical downsides of a rationalistic approach toward ethical decision making and call for a better understanding of the intuitive nature of moral functioning. Corporate scandals have crowded American media for the last decade: Enron, WorldCom, Tyco, and what contributed to the recent Wall Street meltdown, to name just a few. Although individuals’ unethical conduct—such as hiding corporate losses to obtain lucrative bonuses, reporting fraudulent auditing to secure a client, or giving loans to home buyers who cannot afford them—are seldom the sole cause, their decisions sit at the center of those calamities.
