Psalm Sixty-Three, The Book Of Romans, And The Gospel Of Matthew
The readings this Sunday come from the Prophet Jeremiah, Psalm Sixty-Three, The Book of Romans, and the Gospel of Matthew. The readings this week are not big on praise but they still have lessons that they can teach us. They give the message of offering ourselves for the greater glory of God.
The first reading this week is by Jeremiah, Chapter 20 verses seven through nine. It describes the agony that we go through when we are forced to be silent about what we believe in. Jeremiah describes this feeling when he says, “But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones”(Jer 20:9). I can relate this to my life when I am with individuals who don’t believe what I do. I would like to be able to talk and profess what I believe but fear being mocked and made fun of.
The Responsorial Psalm this week comes from Psalm 63. It tells how

This doesn’t mean literally sacrifice ourselves, it means give our lives to Christ. It tells us not to give our lives to worldly things, rather give them to God and praise him.
The gospel this week is Jesus explaining to his apostles that he must die and be raised on the third day. Peter responds saying, "God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you”(Mt 16:24). Jesus said to Peter that he was thinking like a human and not as God does. We can take away from this that even If we don’t understand what God’s plan for us is because we don’t think like he does and we don’t know what he has instore for us.
After reading all of these readings we can take away a few things. We should embrace the opportunity that we have to live our faith. Some places in the world aren’t allowed to worship how they please. We should embrace our ability to worship freely. We should also try to be open minded to what God has instore for us. If you listen closely this Sunday, you can take away all of these messages from the

God calls us to live by the gospel; we must be merciful and compassionate. The only way we may be able to do that is if we follow God’s will and love others as we love oneself. In order to live in God’s will, we have to worship God, not gods. What is inhibiting humans from worshiping God is the worshipping of idols, “it is not enough to go from ignorance to truth….it is pointless to aspire to truth unless we are willing to distill its consequences.”…

Next, chapter ten, “The Psalms for Christians: In the West until the Reformation, and in the East,” traces the Christian community and their use of the Psalms. During this period, we begin to see formal liturgies develop in the early centuries as a part of worship, which included the use of psalms in these liturgies (p.166). It is clear that the Psalms remain an important part of worship, for both the Jew, as seen in the previous chapter, and for the Christian (p.167).…

The passage shows God is promising to listen to our prayers. God has made a covenant to his true believers as well as to those that will come to know Him. God will not mock his followers and He will always listen. Followers of the Son of God will be assured that He is always available. God will answer in ‘His’ way. He will answer with perfect wisdom and perfect love. During Jesus’ teachings he proved that through faith and trust in His judgment he will provide a path for his true believers. These reading were very good and shows that being a Christian is more than just a title we wear above our heads, but rather a title as well as responsibility we are to be obedient to. Thinking about this reminded me of our mission trip to the DR where I wrote a life statement, “To live a life showing a genuine love for others as Christ loved me. To live an authentic day to day life demonstrating an authentic representation of who I am in Christ, because He has given me everything I need and have. To be a light to others to show something is different because I strive to live an authentic, genuine life for Christ.” We’re called to live different, love others, be countercultural, expect suffering, be tolerant, give, and have endurance. The mark of a true believer is love, we are called to love one another as Christ has loved us, if we do not love we are nothing.…
