Prudence
Is Prudence a Special Virtue? Prudence is “right reason applied to action” (Purple Book, p. 99). More clearly, prudence is one’s ability to evaluate and act on a situation by the use of practical reason. There are three acts that define prudence: to take counsel, to judge, and to command. One takes counsel when he discovers the situation. One must then judge and evaluate the discovery using reason. Finally, a command or decision is made based on the counseled and judged. The display of prudence, or lack thereof, was made evident at the episode of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. The Boston Marathon is an annual marathon hosted by numerous cities in Boston, Massachusetts, and attracts more than 500,000 spectators. The marathon is the world’s oldest marathon dating back to 1897. In the 2013 Boston Marathon, two bombs struck near the finish line turning a celebration into devastation. The blasts were about 50-100 yards apart, and sparked disorder in Copley Square. The bombing occurred at 2:45 pm, almost two hours after the first of the races 27,000 runners crossed the finish line. There were three casualties as a result of the bombing; one was reported to be an 8-year-old boy. Hospitals reported at least 144 people were treated, with at least 17 in critical condition and 25 in serious condition, and at least 10 people had limbs amputated (Levs, CNN article). Officials also found multiple unexploded devices near the site. The bombing was declared a “terrorist attack” and left the nation in sorrow. United States President Barack Obama made the statement, “Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups, will feel the full weight of justice.” The chief act of prudence is in the command. If it were in judgment rather than command, he who sins voluntarily against his craft are reputed a better craftsman than he who does so involuntarily. The bombing in Boston was done so voluntarily, and if it were the case that judgment was the chief act of prudence, then no

Multiple Bombs Explode during the Boston Marathon (Apr. 15): Multiple bombs explode near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Two bombs go off around 2:50 in the afternoon as runners finish the race. At least three people are killed. One is an eight year old boy. More than 170 people are injured. Another explosion happens during the afternoon at the JFK Library, but officials confirm that the incident is not connected. Later in the day, President Obama says from the White House briefing room, "We still do not know who did this or why, and people shouldn't jump to conclusions before we have all the facts, but make no mistake: We will get to the bottom of this. Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice." (Apr. 18): President Obama speaks at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston's South End. After the service, both the president and First lady Michelle Obama visit those injured in the explosions who are still recovering in the various hospitals throughout Boston. Later in the day, the FBI releases photos and video of two suspects in the hope that the public can help identify them. "Somebody out there knows these individuals as friends, neighbors, co-workers, or family members. Though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us," says FBI special agent Richard DesLauriers upon the release of the photos and video. Just hours after the FBI releases the images, the two suspects rob a gas station in Central Square then shoot and kill a MIT police officer in his car. Afterwards, the two men carjack a SUV and tell the driver that they had set off the explosions at the marathon. Police pursue the vehicle into Watertown. During the shootout, a MBTA officer is shot and one of the suspects, identified as Tamerlan Tsarnaev, age 26, is killed. A suicide vest is found on his body. (Apr. 19): The other suspect, Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, age 19, remains at large for…

(Tan, 2009) Sadly, not all of our troops return home alive and many that do face many challenges ahead. Physical wounds surly do not go unnoticed. They are fairly common in war time situations and are even shown in war movies. They show the viewer a sense of what a soldier goes through when injured and what to expect; but what about the mental wounds? The United States sends thousands of military men and women overseas into battle, returning them home with not only physical wounds but mental wounds as well.…

The hypothetical imperative commands an action in order to produce something else or for some other purpose and the purpose may be actual or possible. Hypothetical imperatives are divided into two categories including the rules of skill and the council of prudence. The rules of skill are conditional and are set to each individual who possesses it. The council of prudence are attained a priori unlike the rules of skills which are attained through experience and have universal goals such as happiness. Hypothetical imperatives imply that something is good to do or refrain from doing. If…
