It is viewed that in Latino culture, men are the dominant gender, and women are submissive to their male counterparts. However, in “Rain of Gold” written by Victor Villasenor, the character of Dona Margarita, a wife and a mother, possessed strength that was even able to boldly reprimand the character of her husband. Dona Margarita’s strength and support was valued in the book as one of the reason of fulfilling the family’s dreams. She was able to express her anger and frustration on her husband, Don Victor, when he gambled and got drunk. Her family felt hope when she did not give-up her hope that her daughter, Sophia, was still alive. Although she wanted to give the leadership role to her husband Don Victor, the book made it apparent that she is the strength of her family. However, the story also depicted Dona Margarita as a housewife whose primary role is to raise her children and manage the…

    Leon S Story

My January/February Independent Reading book was Leon’s Story by Leon Walter Tillage, and the genre of this book is nonfiction (autobiography). I thought that this was an amazing book and I would recommend this to my peers. This book is about the perspective of the author growing up when he was younger. The overall theme of this book is racism. In Leon’s Story the setting is in the 1930’s where they live on a farm in order for his dad to pay off debts by share-cropping in North Caroline. There are certainly many different conflicts in this book but overall it has to do with racism and the unfair Jim Crow laws (Characters vs Society). This story is sad; it talks about the racism that African-Americans had to deal with at the time and gives a lot of examples of it. The protagonist in the book is Leon; he is friendly to everyone including whites and tries to do everything right and strongly believes that everyone should be equal. But the antagonists are mostly all white people. They’re the antagonists in this book because they hate all African- Americans including Leon and his family just because of skin color, and would even go to the extent of killing them because they don’t like their skin color. This book was short, and fast paced, yet detailed. This book had good details; the author did a good job of explaining everything very clearly, which made the book a lot more interesting. Here is an excerpt of the book so you can see what the author’s writing style is like, “I remember that as a young boy I used to look in the mirror and I would curse my color, my blackness.” Overall this book taught me a lot about how horrible racism was back then. I would definitely recommend this book if you want to read something short and fast paced that will also help you learn a lot more about racism.…

Sigmund Freud said, “A woman should soften but not weaken a man.” This quote exemplifies the character Casilda from Isabel Allende’s short story “The Judge’s Wife”. Although not seen by all as a main character, Casilda is the strongest and most evolutionary character of the short story. “The Judge’s Wife” is an exceptional tale that follows the progression of characters as they fight against their predetermined destinies and how they are viewed in others’ eyes. Casilda is a catalyst for the evolution of almost every character in the story. Not only does her character grow in “The Judge’s Wife”, but she is also a medium for the growth of the two other main characters in the story, Judge Hidalgo and Nicolas Vidal.…

In the Running of Bulls flashbacks were heavily used to show the personal history of each character. This interesting style of writing also shows the intricacy between the relationships of each character while staying very simple to comprehend. Equally as interesting as the style of writing in this short story, is identifying the many background settings that compare or depict Don Miguel de la Mendoza’s dark emotions toward Teresa and Carlito. The settings in this short story have a lot to do with associating and symbolizing Mendoza. Not only do the settings symbolize Mendoza’s evil inner thoughts and emotions but also the objects that surround him. The story as whole is built upon the betrayal and infidelity that Teresa and Carlito brought upon Mendoza.…
