Pros And Cons Of On-Campus Daycare
THE PROS OF HAVING AN ON-CAMPUS DAYCARE PROVIDER FOR STUDENTS WITH CHILDREN

Prepared for
RU Child Development Task Force

November 21, 2013

Introduction

The Radford Child Development Inc., a non-profit organization created by the Radford University Child Development Task Force, is proceeding with plans to construct a child care facility near campus. The child care facility will be built on Tyler Avenue in which the land was provided by a local real estate developer, Price-Williams. The exact location has not yet been announced. The child-care facility will only be for RU faculty and staff. There needs to be a child-care facility for students as well. This child-care

Benefits On-Campus Daycare
The benefits of providing an on-campus daycare for students are as follows:
• Easy access for parents to visit their children throughout the day, ensuring that the quality of care for their child is being reached
• Increased student attendance and productivity at school because of the convenience of the daycare
• Reduced stress for students and reduced trips to the babysitter or off-campus daycares because the daycare will be conveniently located close to the child of the student. This will keep the student parent and child together at all times and cancel out any reason to leave early or be late due to having an outside babysitter.
Solutions
In order to allow daycare to be affordable for students, the amount charged to the student for daycare should be based on the student’s income along with how much assistance from Financial Aid they are receiving.

In a news release released to the public on October 10, 2013, it stated, “The RU Child Development Task Force conducted a survey of RU faculty and staff in November 2012 and found that 93 percent of the respondents said it was important to have a quality child care facility near campus (Osborne, 2013).” This is a great indication that students with children would loyally use the childcare program provided by Radford University. Also, the location being moved onto campus whether it is near the athletic building at the bridge or in Peters Hall where Education is the main focus would give parents a great sense of security. It should be in a building that is locked and can be accessed by a swipe card or security code given to the employees on duty,
Conclusion
The benefits of having a daycare for students with children are all sensibly reasonable and should be considered before finalizing any plans and making any decisions. Having a daycare for students at a convenient location and at an affordable cost will not only make things easier for students to finish college, but it will also increase the enrollment of students with children at Radford University.

The Department of Human Services licensing regulations of a staff to child ratio that all licensed facilities must follow. If a center pays just the minimum wage at least $1.95 per hour would need to be charged for each infant just cover the cost of the employee. In addition, other costs that impact day care center operations include occupancy costs, food, insurance, supplies and programming expenses. Occupancy and food costs are influenced by the Department of Human Services. The facility must follow specific nutritional guidelines in preparing meals and snacks. The board concluded that constructing a new facility would be the best option for providing quality childcare in an attractive and safe environment. The ACDC board spearheaded the construction of an 8,000 square foot building that would be owned by ACDC and funded in part by a federal grant and a loan from the local USDA Rural Development Office. The cost of food is included as part of the tuition fee. Also when it came time to analyze costs, it was the board’s opinion that the Head Start and school district programs should share in the costs of the loan and building. ACDC pays the bills for the entire facility. The only exception to this is the telephone expense, as each program contracts and pays for its own phone service. ACDC has four different insurance costs: property, general liability, officer’s bond and worker’s compensation. The costs not previously discussed include administrative or program costs such as accounting, advertising, continuing education and supplies. These costs are attributable solely to ACDC. Activity based costing is used frequently in manufacturing settings because it…

Many people have their own theory on childcare and that it can depend on the needs of the child. However there are several other factors that need to be considered when choosing to send your child and/or children to either a public or private daycare versus an in home daycare. First there is the cost. The tuition at a daycare center is typically higher than the cost of an in home daycare. Another factor to consider is the type of care that you want and/or need your child to receive. There are several different things to consider in this aspect; social skills that need to be developed, schedules that your child will need to…

    Institutional Daycare

Berry Brazelton and Stanley I. Greenspan said no to institutional child care. The big issue they believe is that the child would not be recieving high-quality day-care facilities that will better their children. They believe that children should have a pernament adult they are spending most of their time with growing up in the early stages of the children’s lives. While enrolled in a day-care facility, many times they have workers coming and going and the child nevergets a special connection with one of the caregivers. An example would be when a parent comes into the room. The children usually all flood to the parent even if its not that specific child’s mother. That loving, mother-like feeling they get they can’t recieve from just a random worker. In order for them to believe that child-care would be beneficial for the child they believe that: In the first three years of a childs life they should have the same caregiver, there should be no time (other than sleeping) that the children should be out of the caregivers sight, independent activities should be no longer than 15 minutes, and recommend that a parent should have the child during the critical times during the…

Home-based day care takes place in a day care provider's home, which results in a more personal homier feel. It offers your child the opportunity to be with a group of children of a variety of ages where older children can be a role model for the younger ones. There are fewer children enrolled with people in and out of the day care on a daily basis resulting in less chance of illness, disease, and injury. Low ratios allow more bonding time amongst the provider and children as well as child-to-child. Care is constant and dependable with one provider throughout your child's day care years. Day care homes tend to be less institutionalized and regimented allowing for more personal flexible care tailored to your child's needs. Home-based day care offers a variety of age appropriate toys and activities for the children to do and play with daily. There will be a daily schedule more flexible and adaptable to each child's individual needs. A day care home may or may not transport children depending upon the agreement between provider and parent.…

In addition, having an on-site daycare would allow parents to save some money. While most daycares charge a flat fee, an on-site daycare charges by the hour, making it possible for the parent to bring in the child only when childcare is necessary. Gasoline is also another expense that would decrease, as students and employees would bring their children to college with them, requiring no extra trips.…

There has been research that has found positive effects of day-care on children’s social and cognitive development and suggests that perhaps child-care centers encourage more social interaction than the environment of a home-reared child. There may be more stimulation in day-care and more communication and sharing to be learned, therefore enhancing these abilities of the children who attend them (Peisner-Feinberg et al. 2001). Evidence shows that a good preschool education is beneficial to young children. Children who attend preschool have a head start when they begin elementary school having learned basic concepts in a preschool center. Some of the negative effects a child may experience while attending a child care center include high child to adult ratios, insufficient materials and equipment, staff with inadequate training and experience, and caregiver burnout. There are truly some wonderful and caregivers and daycares out there. Choosing the best one is a very…
