In 2014, more than 140,000 American horses were slaughtered for human consumption in foreign countries. Over 90% of these horses were young, healthy, and useable horses. There is a false conception that only old, sick, and unusable horses are slaughtered, but sadly many pregnant mares and young foals are also slaughtered. These horses travel, packed into a trailer, with no food, water, or rest for days before reaching their final destination, where they commonly die horrible inhumane deaths in unregulated processing plants. It is not uncommon for horses to die before reaching the slaughter house. The very young and very old are at the most risk of dying in the trailer. If they fall to floor, they will be trampled. Until strict regulations are established and enforced, all horse owners, and breed associations should be against US horse slaughter, and also against transporting horses out of the country for slaughter.
