Pros And Cons Of Genetic Engineering
1. Defeating fatal diseases. Genetic enhancement can make our genes resistant to diseases that can be contracted. There is potential to completely cure the diseases that have currently don not have a known cure such as Cystic Fibrosis by creating a gene to fight it or taking the gene that causes the disease out entirely.
2. Longer life span. Life spans have already gotten significantly longer from decades past due to the medical advancements. Genetic engineering can help prevent the diseases we are born with but also prevent diseases that present themselves later in life, such as Alzheimer’s. Genetic engineering can also manipulate our genes and reverse the cellular process of the natural decline of our bodies. This will also help decrease

Detecting and Fixing diseases in fetuses before they are born. Genetic testing will be able to determine the possibility of a disease or special needs disorder such as Down’s Syndrome early on in the pregnancy. Genetic engineering can then fix these genetic glitches before the baby is born. Therefore, the baby would be born healthy without any illnesses this would prevent the rate of abortions. This will also end the passing of a disease down to future descendants because it eliminates the chance of contracting the disease but also the ability to being a carrier of the disease.
Cons
1. Genetic Enhancement can and will be used for “phenotype enhancement” which will lead to the development of designer babies. This enhancement will no longer be used for medical purposes but for social reasons. Parents will begin to change genes to control their child’s appearance, such as changing the color of their hair, skin tone, and height. They would also use this to enhance their child’s intelligence.
2. Genetic enhancement will not be available to everyone. This is a very expensive process and the lower class will not be able to afford this. Leading to the lower class being the “diseased” but could also be known as the social “have nots” because they haven’t primed their child to be successful by enhancing the intelligence levels.
