Prop 30

Proposition 30 Every year, the tuition for colleges rises significantly. Our education budget keeps getting cut by the millions. And we as students are struggling to make ends meet just trying to finish up our college education. We need to find a solution to this calamity. With Proposition 30, we might be able to make our first steps down the yellow brick road. Currently, our student tuition fee is $46 a unit. On July 28, 2009, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed AB2X (the education trailer bill to the 2009-10 state budget), setting the community college enrollment fee to $26 per unit(1). In 2011, it rose to $36 and our budget got reduced by $290 million(2). Who knows what will happen next year if this bill doesn't get passed. Let's start with the bad news first. The most important thing on the average citizen's mind is the fact that California's state tax will rise to 7.5% from 7.25%, a 3.45% percentage increase from the current rate(3). That's not too bad considering a couple years back our sales tax was at an even higher premium at 8.25%. It also raises taxes for people in tax brackets of $250,000 and higher. Which is something to consider, but as a student, I feel that the wealthier population needs to help us in order to bring back the economy and make this a prosperous nation again. As logic dictates: the more education an individual receives, the better job they can acquire, the more money they make, which equals the more money that can contribute to our economy. The question is, what is the end result of all these tax rises? Well how does $6 billion dollars sound! 78 billion pesos! 3.7 billion British Pounds! 480 billion Japanese Yen! That sound's like a terrific number. Alas, the downside is that community college system would not receive all that money. Though we would receive a cool $210 million for our efforts. That may not sound much, but that can be counted for an additional

Obama has proposed the idea of having community college be free in order to increase the number of people to own a degree. Joanne Jacobs writes in her article about free community college that “The White House estimates that this would cost $60 billion for over 10 years” to execute. With our economy in shambles at the moment, this can worsen the economic status of the country, adding to the drastic debt that continuously rises on a daily basis. If Obama creates some sort of promise about tuition being free, then another issue could arise, which is having schools become more crowded than what they already are. States need to spend more money in order to increase the…

Prop 51,gives more money to charter schools but Californians already pay $2 billion each year on state school bonds therefore, If this proposition is passed this could cost an additional $500 million each year, money the state can’t afford. What truly matters is the attendance rate, if more students are present then schools get more money without having to increase taxes. People should vote no on Proposition 51 for one reason and that is taxes because California is already in debt and paying back taxes is a major issue. The annual budget is more than the schools combined, these schools are required to pay back or they may lose the education for students such as books, desks, chairs, and most of all, facilities, and schools have to do funds and…

My proposal is to make it illegal for states to charge students from other states more money for college tuition (i.e. out of state tuition). One of the benefits would be providing more educational and equal opportunities for all people. Also it would benefit our economy by creating more fairly equally educated citizens for jobs. With this proposal it would be easier for people to go to a college that is specific to what they want to do, with less cost. It will definitely benefit families that plan on sending more kids off to college.…

I have researched to see if my investment would help with tuition in 12 years. I used an inflation calculator and with the current trend of 45% increases in college tuition per year in 12 years college will cost 99,900.49 in the first year and 8% inflation increase each year after. This was done for a 4yrs public college (College Cost Projecter, 2013).…

    Prop 63 Pros And Cons

Although proposition 63 has many pros like, providing a detailed background check and limiting the amount of ammunition one can buy, it would take entirely too much time and money to work effectively. Prop 63 will burden the court system with the reinforcement of crooked laws, and would cost tens of millions of dollars annually increasing taxes. In the long run this proposition would make no difference because in order to keep taxes as low as possible, security measures would be reduced and then there would be no difference from the current system. Vote no for prop 63 in order to save money and time.…

PROPOSITION 215, also known as the California Compassionate Use Act, was enacted by the voters and took effect on Nov. 6, 1996 as California Health & Safety Code 11362.5. The law makes it legal for patients and their designated primary caregivers to possess and cultivate marijuana for their personal medical use given the recommendation or approval of a California-licensed physician. Most of the people that use marijuana as medicine as a medicine suffer from terrible diseases such as Cancer, Glaucoma, and even AIDS. People have said that is helps treat other symptoms as well, such as signs of epilepsy and other diseases where muscle spasms and seizures are very common. But not everyone qualifies for the use of medical marijuana. You would strictly need to have a recommendation from your doctor.…

    Prop 19 Pros and Cons

Their are many pros to prop 19 as well as cons. I believe the pros out weight the cons. Some of the pros would be a common sense control of marijuana, it will help stop wasting taxpayer dollars on failed marijuana prohibition. Controls and taxes marijuana like alcohol, and will only be available to adults. Adds criminal penalties for giving i to anyone under 21 years of age. weakens drug cartel and enforces road and workplace safety. It will generate billions in revenue, and save tax payers money. When marijuana is illegal, the government ends up spending unnecessary money just to jail illegal marijuana users. Some people may argue that smoking marijuana isn’t a serious or dangerous crime and it’s comparable to drinking with less health consequences. The passing of prop 19 would solve California’s overcrowded prison issue; there would be more cells to contain vitally “danger to society” criminals. The legalization of marijuana also allows the government to stop spending money they don’t have.…

Proposition 60 is a bill that on paper and theoretically, is supposed to support and put an emphasis on people using safe sex measures. The bill requires adult performers such as porn stars, to wear condoms during sexual intercourse scenes and will also require the producers and companies to pay for testing of HIV and other STD's. The bill is highly controversial in California, where most of the porn industry exists and is mainly supported by government associations that are meant to prevent AIDS, whereas the opposing groups, mostly consist clubs, private organizations, and also workers’ rights advocate groups such as an Adult Performer Advocacy Committee. The opposition has also gained support from both the Democratic Party and Republican…

    California Dream Act

Born and raised here in the U.S. many students, and parents for that matter, are currently struggling with the bills, loans, and the stress of trying to stabilize a healthy future for themselves by pursuing an education. When a law like the California Dream Act is passed, it makes those who have done nothing but follow the rules of our legal system, feel as if the right as a legal citizen is being pushed aside. The money to fund the education of these illegal immigrants has to come from somewhere, causing a bigger whole to burn in tax payer’s pocket; when the money can easily go elsewhere to legal students in dire need of it. The state of California has always portrayed itself as the “free” state and allowed equal opportunity to everyone, to the point where now legal citizenship does not seem as if it really matters anymore. The California Dream Act may seem as if it is the answer to our educational system but when better dissected we see that with limited funding, we are defying the rights of legal citizens by providing for the education of the undocumented immigrants and bearing the expense of increased taxes and tuition.…

Most high school students after graduation will attend a community college for a degree in his or her choice. Some students will have the luxury of their parents to pay for their college expenses. However, most students will not have their parents to pay and they will have to rely on student loans. Depending on which degree the student chooses is the deciding factor in the cost of classes. Most credit hours in a community college range from 100-369 dollars per credit hour (College Calc). This calculation is depending on if the student is a in state or out of state student.…

    Proposition 8

Do you believe society should have the ability to determine if same sex partners should marry? Determining your soul partners should be a privilege for all, such as homosexuals, lesbians, gays, bisexuals etc. and not society. Homosexuals are not abnormal humans, so there is no reason to treat them any different, after all they are citizens who oblige to the same jurisdictions. In the brief article, 8 Is Not Hate: The Meaning of a proposition by Jennifer Roback Morse, Morse explains how marriage is a gender-based institution that attaches mothers and fathers to each other and to their children, but I disagree with her theory of marriage. I believe marriage is based on the love, trust, and the ability to provide for one another. If you were brought into this world as a homosexual then who are you to deny marriage to same sex partners, because although you deny marriage to same sex couples they’re not going to change their beliefs and values just because society does not accept them for who they are. Same sex couples should have the ability to choose their own spouses, without having to deal with ignorant bigots such as those who won’t accept others preferences, because of religious beliefs and values morals. If homosexuals have the same responsibility, consequences, and obligations as straight people then there is no reason to keep marriage away from same sex partner.…

The 26th amendment helped further balance the difference in equality between 21 and 18 year olds by allowing the latter to vote. The 26th amendment states “ The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.”1 A large number of individuals fought for this amendment; the amendment provided for significant popular consent of the American democracy.…
