Unit 024 – Promote child and Young Person Development
Outcome 1) Be able to assess the development needs of children or young people and prepare a development plan 1. Explain the factors that need to be taken into account when assessing development
You can assess a child’s development by doing a variety of different observations; narrative, tracker, language and video but you must also take into account confidentiality. Before carrying out observations you must get permission from the parent’s and ensure them that they will be the only ones viewing their child’s observations which are stored in their personal folders. It is also important that you only talk to authorized personal about the child, the only time confidentiality can be broken is if the child is at risk. It is also important to respect the children’s wishes and feelings. If you are observing a child/young person they may feel uncomfortable or upset and would like you to stop. It is also important to take into account the child’s/young person’s ethnic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds as these can play an important role in how the children act and the understanding of the words being used, for example if they come from a different county, they may say a word in their language. We must take into account disability or specific requirements, ensuring the activity you are observing them on is within their development stage or the child will be underestimated and the observation can be unreliable. It is important that the information is reliable as their won’t be an accurate picture of the child’s development, if the information isn’t reliable the child’s development may be in harm and the underestimating of their potential abilities. It is also important to avoid being bias towards children, you must stay objective when assessing children, a great way of doing this is to have another person observing the same child to ensure the information is accurate.
