BACKGROUND In order to figure out the perfect shot, you are going to need to know what projectile motion is. So really, what is projectile motion? Projectile motion is the curved path (also known as a parabola) an object follows when thrown near the surface of the Earth. It has an initial velocity, but after that, the only force acting on the object is gravity. In order to figure out the perfect shot, you are going to need to know what projectile motion is. A parabola can easily be viewed as an elegant arched trajectory naturally formed by any projectile, from an artillery round to a tomato, moving in a gravitational field. Parabolas have been extensively studied since people started throwing stuff at each other, and they shape the outcome of many ballistic sports, such as baseball, golf, football, shot put and more. But they reach their apex in basketball, where field goals and free throws demand precision control of parabolas. So in tribute to the ongoing NCAA Basketball championships, I present to you, “the March Madness Parabola”.…

The movements of Volleyball are a complex combination of strength, power, agility, and finesse. Each of these components is comprised of intricate, small movements, the summation of which are coordinated acts of striking the volleyball in a desired fashion. Due to the many aspects related to the biomechanics of volleyball, not every strike of the ball is perfect. Many times, mistakes made by athletes are due to the impossibility of executing hundreds of tiny movements perfectly every single time.…

We used carbon paper on top of white paper to determine where the ball lands on the floor. We then shot the ball at angles of 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 degrees. We recorded the distances after each shot and determined that shooting the ball at 40 degrees gave us the maximum range. We kept the launcher at a medium setting and shot the ball straight out 5 times and determined what the average range was at this degree. We used that data to determine that the initial velocity was 4.627 m/s. Next we chose our own angle which was 22 degrees and predicted that the range would be 2.57 meters. We then shot the ball 5 times and determined the average range of flight was 3.03…

The purpose of this lab is to give the student a better understanding about projectile motion and to understand Newtons theories and laws of motion. We will be firing the plastic ball from the projectile launcher three times from eight different angles from the ground & a stool. With this experiment we will see if shooting from the ground gets the plastic ball to travel farther from the ground or from a higher elevation, the stool.…

The two pictures below demonstrate the calculations from Trial 1 at 0° and Trial 1 at 45°. In this experiment we did five separate shots from the cannon at 0°, and 3 separate shots at 45°. We determined the average distance of the shots from each angle by using a meter stick. We were then able to calculate the velocity of the shots by dividing the time from distance. After getting the results, the distance from the shots fired at 45° had a greater distance from the shots fired at 0° horizontally. This is because as the ball which is fired increases, the height increases. As the height increases, the time it takes for the ball to hit the ground increases and the range (distance) is greater.…

The dependence of two-dimensional velocity and position components on time as well as whether or not said components are constant was determined. Video was recorded of a ball being projected laterally and data of its flight were plotted. From analyzing the data and the corresponding graphs that followed, it was shown that while the horizontal and vertical components of position, and the vertical component of velocity have slope and therefore, are not constant, the graph of horizontal velocity showed no slope. From this it was concluded that horizontal velocity of a projectile remains constant.…
