Project Rosetta
Rosetta is a robotic spacecraft built and launched by the European Space Agency to perform a detailed study of the comet 67P. It is part of the ESA Horizon 2000 cornerstone missions and it is the first mission in which a spacecraft is planned to orbit and land on a comet. Rosetta was launched in March 2004 on an Ariane 5 rocket and will reach the comet in August 2014. The spacecraft consists of two main elements: the Rosetta space probe orbiter, which features 12 instruments, and the Philaerobotic lander, with an additional nine instruments. The Rosetta mission will orbit 67P for 17 months and is designed to complete the most detailed study of a comet ever attempted. The mission is controlled from the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC), in Darmstadt, Germany.
The probe is named after the Rosetta Stone, a basalt slab of Egyptian origin featuring a decree in three scripts. The lander is named after the Nile island Philae, where an obelisk was discovered with inscriptions. A comparison of the hieroglyphs on the Rosetta Stone and the obelisk led to greater understanding of the Egyptian writing system. Similarly, it is hoped that these spacecraft will result in better understanding of comets and the early Solar System.
The spacecraft has already performed two successful asteroid flyby missions on its way to the comet. In 2007, Rosetta also performed a Mars swingby (flyby), and returned images. The craft completed its fly-by of asteroid 2867 Šteins in September 2008 and of 21 Lutetia in July 2010. On 20 January 2014, Rosetta was taken out of a 31-month hibernation mode and is continuing to its target.

According to BBC’s documentary ‘Ancient Egypt - The Mystery of the Rosetta Stone,’ the Rosetta Stone was found by French soldiers after invading Egypt in 1798. This stone was unique because it had carved writings in three different scripts: Hieroglyphic, Demotic, and Greek. The oldest writings were the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. No one understood these mysterious writings. Were they were just symbols, letters, or words? Finding this stone; while a great discovery, was only the beginning of years of mystery, confusion, and conflict.…

Marian Anderson was born on February 27th, 1897. She was the oldest of three sisters. Marian Anderson revealed her vocal talent as a child, but her family could not afford to pay for formal training. So her parents decided it was best to let her join the choir at the Union Baptist Church at the age of six. Then at the age of 13, Marian joined the senior choir. Within that time period Marian was also focused on attending her local high school until she was then notified that she was rejected because she was an African American. So Marian decided that it was best for her to attend the music high school that was located in Pennsylvania .Members of her church congregation raised funds for her to attend the music school for a year. As Marian impressed everyone with her talented voice her father decided it was best to surprise her with a piano that then meant so much to her. Mainly because she knew her parents couldn’t afford to pay for professional lessons so she decided to learn on her own. Furthermore, Marian Anderson commitment to her music and her choice as a singer very well impressed the rest of her choir the Union Baptist Church. They then gathered together and raised enough money, about $500, to pay for Anderson to train under Giuseppe Boghetti, a respected voice teacher. During her two years of studying with Boghetti, Anderson won a chance to sing at the Lewiston Stadium in New York after entering a contest organized by the New York Philharmonic Society. Other opportunities soon followed. In 1928 she performed at Carnegie Hall for the first time, and eventually she was then on tour around the world performing. Much of Marian’s life would eventually see her breaking down obstacles for an African-American performer. For example, in 1955 she became the first African-American singer to perform as a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Although Marian Anderson was…

Over spring break, I went home and saw The Laramie Project at my high school. Before seeing the play, I knew a brief overview of what had happened in Laramie, Wyoming, but did not know the details. I knew that Matthew Shepard was a gay, male, college student who was brutally murdered from a hate crime. When I first got to the auditorium, I could barely find my seat because the entire place was packed with people, and I knew it had been a sold out show. In the play, the boy who acted as Matthew Shepard, was gay in real life as well. I thought that was very brave of him to volunteer to play Matthew, and it really added to the intensity of the play. It made the play more realistic, and made it seem like something that was actually happening. During the play, there were constant interviews that were conducted of people from Laramie, Wyoming, who knew Matthew personally. During these interviews, the spotlight would shine on the person who was getting interviewed. However, the interviewer who was supposed to be asking the questions was not shown, instead, the person was just telling the audience information about Matthew and what had happened. As the spotlight was on them speaking, everything else in the auditorium was pitch black. During this time, the cast ran on stage and changed the scenery to prepare for the next scene. I really liked this idea and thought it was very clever because they did not waste time closing the curtain to change scenes; instead it happened during the actual play. In addition, it was not distracting at all because all of the attention was focused on the person getting interviewed. I also really enjoyed the costumes that were chosen, all of the actors and actresses were dressed in flannels and a pair of jeans. I thought this was really fitting for the setting of the play. After seeing this play, I definitely had a much better understanding of what happened in Laramie, Wyoming.…

The Merneptah Stele is an enticing inscription by the Ancient Egyptian king Merneptah discovered in 1896 at Thebes by Flinders Petrie. The inscriptions are put down on a ten foot high piece of black granite. The text contained in these inscriptions is mainly an account of the king’s victories in battle during the last decade of the thirteenth century B.C.E. It is of important archeological significance due to the last few lines in the inscription which is the first known non-biblical reference to Israel.…
