Professionalism In Nursing Practice
Professionalism in nursing practice in New Zealand involves many fields that the Registered nurse must following in order to be complaint and fit to do the job correctly and safely. Jill White quotes “When we say a person acts ‘professionally’ for example, we imply that the person is conscientious in actions, knowledgeable in subject and responsible too self and others” (White, 2014). Acting in a professional way you follow four core values. Respect, Trust, Partnership and lastly Integrity. When it came to Registered nurse Abb he did not use the core values but mainly Integrity. The competencies are designed to be applied to registered nurse practice in a mix of clinical contexts. In the New Zealand competencies there are four domains. Under each domain they display the competencies required. In Registered Abb practice the main competencies they were not applied are competence 1.1 “Accepts responsibility for ensuring that his/her nursing practice and conduct meet the standards of the professional, ethical and relevant legislated requirements.” Competency 2.8 “Reflects upon, and evaluates with peers and experienced nurses, the effectiveness of nursing care.” (NCNZ,2007) Registered nurse Abb in his practice failed to ask for assistance from his co-workers. The guidelines have been development by the nursing council, to give advice to nurses about how to use social media and electronic communication correctly. (NCNZ, 2012) RN Abb had made a mistake with a patient, which became very stressful from the whole experience. He went onto his social media page and wrote, that he was not in fault about the trouble of hearing the patient’s blood pressure. This is a breach of the Mr B’s privacy and confidentiality. Nurses must follow ethical and legal responsibility to maintain their patients’ confidentiality. This applies to any form of online using, this means communication is with other nurses, friends on your social network, and to the public in a form of a blog. Being anonymous about patients online is no excuse for breaching confidentiality. (NZNO 2012) When RN Abb wrote on his social media page he did not respect his patient’s privacy by disclosing what had happened.
