Coursework 2 – Transformer Core at the request of Dr. D.M.Hepburn |

1. Aims & Objectives 2.1. Aim
The first aim of this coursework is to use the skills developed from lab session one to create a transformer model, using software package MagNet. This package allows you to simulate electromagnetic fields and measure the change in flux in the designed model.
The second aim hoping to be achieved during this investigation is to gain a better understanding of the design of transformers and how through variations of materials and dimensions the flux leakage and consequentially the efficiency of the transformer can be affected. 2.2. Objectives
The objectives of the investigation are: 1. To understand the variation in magnitude of the flux leakage in the area between the upper surface of the transformer coils and core. 2. To consider the flux variation an air gap in the centre member of a transformer core.
These objectives will be ascertained by observing the variation in:
(i). Magnitude and direction of the flux across the region between the upper sections of the coil and the lower face of the top level of the core, shown as H-H’ in Figure 1. The data taken at a level which is 5mm below the face of the core.
(ii). Magnitude of the flux through the centre middle member of the core, shown as V-V’ in Figure 1, (Page 5). The data should be taken from 5mm above to 5mm below the faces of the core. (Hepburn, 2012)
