Cultural Immersion Project Part 3 Instructions
Individual Encounter and Synthesis

You will conduct an in-depth, 1-hour interview with an individual or married couple from your selected cultural group to develop an understanding of the cultural factors that helped shape that individual’s (or couple’s) cultural identity.

A variety of issues may be explored in the interview. The knowledge you gained from Parts 1 and 2, as well as your sense of the person/couple you interview, will guide you in how personal you can get with your questions. Cultural groups and individuals vary on how private they are. Use their feedback regarding what areas you can probe. If the person is very open, go deeper. If not, then respect that cultural boundary and ask yourself why this boundary is there. Issues that you may wish to explore during the interview include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Early childhood experiences and parental values
2. Earliest memories of recognizing membership in a culturally different group
3. The role of religion/spirituality
4. Immigration experiences
5. Similarities/differences between couples’ interactions in the U.S. compared to in the person’s original culture
6. School experiences as a member of a cultural minority
7. Experiences with subtle racism or discrimination
8. Experiences with overt racism or discrimination
9. Ways the person/couple chose his/her/their career(s) or made career choices
10. The experience of being culturally different
11. Attitudes about the “majority” culture
12. Extent of desire to assimilate majority cultural attitudes, values, and lifestyles
13. Feelings of oppression
14. Feelings of anger toward majority culture
15. From the person’s/couple’s own cultural background, are there any racist attitudes toward or stereotyping of individuals from other particular cultures?
16. Strengths identified from the person’s/couple’s cultural background that help him/her/them cope with living in the U.S.

An aggressive prison behavioural subculture that focuses on masculinity and the assertion of dominance determines the experiences and behaviour of men in prison. An examination of the underlying factors that lead to heightened masculinity in an all-male prison reveals an atmosphere of hostility that subsequently influences the experiences of incarcerated males. This essay will discuss the applicability of Marxist theory in understanding and evaluating the experiences of men in prison. It will ultimately argue that the Marxist theory can aid in assessing the experiences of men in prison, despite a Marxist tendency to ignore the prison subculture reality and the ability of a hypermasculine prison subculture to detract from traditional justifications…

In this case study I will explore certain possible dynamics related to culture and ethnicity that have been reported in relation to the psychology of Mexican Americans as well as other immigrant communities. Cristal is a 16-year-old Mexican American female. Cristal seems to be experiencing some distress in her life, which seems to stem from cultural conflict rather than inherent psychopathology. Cristal is struggling with the question of whether she should stay home and care for her mother and family or if she should go away to college. She feels that others don’t understand her. This type of thought pattern is frequently observed within immigrant families, it is called, “intergenerational conflict between parents and children over retention of traditional values and ways as opposed to acculturation to “White European” American values”, (Diller, 2011).…

    Prison Environment

The prison environment is defined as the atmosphere of aspects within a prison, including: inmates, guards, facilities, privileges, morale, etc. A prison environment is strict and isn’t happy. The main goal being punishment, the overall atmosphere will be low, and considering the criminals contained there, not pleasant. The environment affects institutional management and custody because the prisons needs are ever changing, so management and custody procedures must be. Institutional management is there to ensure the facility is run as well as possible. To do this, they must address the needs of the environment of the prison. Custody is also related because if gaps are seen in procedures, management must correct those to protect the integrity and safety of the institution and inmates. To improve the environment, it’s important to improve the morale of inmates. Accomplish this by giving inmates something to work towards, that they are passionate about. This could be education or a hobby. If they have something to take pride in morale will rise and prison environment will follow. Overcrowding also dampens prison environment and can be fixed by addressing which inmates deserve to be incarcerated at any point.…

Ever since it was possible for immigration, people have been coming to the United States from all around the world. According to the 2000 Census, foreign born immigrants account for 11.1% (31 million).
