The competition that challenged Frito – Lay was none other than Wise, Pringles, and Chipos. Wise because they had been around since the 1920’s, and Pringles and Chips because these chips were made from mashed or dehydrated potatoes and shaped into a uniformed shape that could be stacked inside of a can or packaged in a box. They had several advantages over the regular potato chips: one advantage was that their packaging made them less fragile, the second advantage was that their packaging was less bulky and easier to ship, and the third advantage was that they could be made and shipped in on location. The main advantage of these two competitors were that they were backed by two product giants, Pringles by Proctor & Gamble Company and Chipos by General Mills, Inc. Frito – Lay also had other competitors in other snack categories, such as Nabisco, Inc. with Mister Salty pretzels and Standard Brands, Inc. with Planters…

P&G’s management should look at Pringles launches in other European countries to help prepare for the Italian launch. At the same time, they need to recognize that Italy is very different from these other countries. P&G first achieved success in the U.K. and Germany, countries where consumption patterns were similar to those in the North American market. Pringles began to expand into the southern European market as well, where launches in Spain and Greece both achieved success. In southern Europe, consumption patterns were entirely different. Rather than grabbing market share for the snack market, these countries required Pringles to try to modify the consumption habits of consumers. For example, Italy eats a larger percentage of their meals at home (77% for lunch, 90% for dinner) compared to the US (< 50%). This clearly translates into…

Cadburys first identified a market through a rise in modern society. With modern technologies people are often found to have a night in, with things such as ‘Girls Nights’ becoming popular. Cadburys noticed that there would be a market for snacks, for these type of events and ‘lazy days, something that is ‘easy to share and contains enough pieces in the pack for everyone’. Cadburys have acknowledged the problem and have created a solution: ‘Cadbury Snaps are individual chocolate curves, available in a variety of flavours. There are approximately 40 curves in each pack. With so many pieces in each pack and with Snaps available in a variety of flavours, Snaps are an ideal chocolate sharing product.’ This criteria fits into the needs for this type of market as well as Cadburys finding a target market: ‘young adults (20-35 years old) who are sociable and enjoy spending time with their friends and family.’ Cadburys have found a problem and offered a solution to a target market that is likely to purchase the product.…

One of the main reasons I think bite-size candies are so popular with adults is because of the portion size. For example, in my office whenever we have bite-size candies like snickers, milky-way, and 3 musketeers the women in the office will eat the bite-sized candies here and there. They enjoy being able to eat just that little piece to satisfy their sweet tooth. Also, adults tend to not have as big of a sweet tooth as children do. Having the smaller portion is just enough to satisfy the sweet tooth of an adult. “Bite-size products are especially popular with adult consumers” explains Peter & Olson (2010, p. 383). They are especially popular come holidays like Christmas and Easter. Bite-sized candies are a great snack that many adults will sit on their living room tables or in their kitchen. This is popular for holiday parties as well. The holiday season basically gives adults a reason to eat bite-sized candies.…
