Principles of Verbal and Nonverbal Communication

The first principle is to recognize that all languages have a value. All languages have a

value and no language is better than the other. The second principle that everyone speaks a

different dialect. Everyone in the United States have a different dialect whether it being

Midwestern, Southern, Eastern, or Western, everyone has a different vocabulary,

pronunciation, and grammar. The third principle is to understand that everyone’s vocabulary

does not mean the same thing to others. Most times other people’s vocabulary is

misunderstood. The fourth is to recognize variations in how spoken language is used across

cultures. The spoken word is what peoples the most. The last principle is to follow suggestions

for effective verbal communication as one way to move closer to share understanding. By using

this principle it can help you get a lot further in your career. Having a positive attitude will help

your boss to see that you have a grown up attitude instead of a teen attitude. Having a positive

attitude can help you to get a promotion; your boss will know that you have the right attitude

to handle different situations.

The three principles I think are critical for effective communications is everyone speaks

a different dialect, understanding that everyone’s vocabulary does not mean the same to

others, and follow suggestions for effective verbal communication as one way to move closer to

shared understanding. Understanding that everyone speaks a different dialect is a very critical

for effective communication. For example, I am from the South, and I hear a lot of people say

different things about the accent. It makes me mad because people judge or make fun of

Southern people accents but in actuality not everyone from the South is dumb. People need to

stop judging people by the way that they talk. Understanding that everyone’s vocabulary does

not mean the same thing to others is also critical for effective communication. People in this

world tend to take what others may say in the wrong way. Following suggestions for effective

verbal communication as one way to move closer to shared understanding is also very critical

for me in effective communication. If I have a positive attitude from the very beginning of my

career, it will take me along way throughout my career. No matter what a patient or anyone

will say to me I will conduct myself in a professional way and not conduct myself in a negative

way because it will only set me back in overall career goals. For example, if I have a bad

attitude, and I need a recommendation for a job, my previous boss is going to tell the other

company that I have applied for about my attitude.

I had a very god experience with verbal communication. I worked at a casino, and I started off as a cashier. No matter how many time people would get upset, curse me out, or

make negative remarks toward me I would never make any sly remarks back. The other cashiers

use to make those sly remarks back and curse them out. I always smiled and told the people to

have a nice day. My supervisor seen my positive attitude and I indeed got a promotion. I was so

excited; the other casher’s were made because they had been there longer than I was. One

attitude takes them along way throughout life but some people do not realize it.

I could use the five principles in the work place to get ahead. I f I the five principles in

the health care workplace I would be able to understand my peers, the patients, and boss. I

would not like the patients to come in to an office and say, “That nurse has a bad attitude.” I

want to make people feel comfortable. I have been to some doctor offices and the nurses have

the worst attitudes that I have ever seen. Having a bad attitude will cause patients to not want

to come to a doctor’s office. I have switched doctors’ offices because of nurses having bad

attitudes.

In my book technology does not influence the communication process for me. I am do

not communicated thought technology, unless I am doing my school work. I believe if someone

has something to tell another person they should just tell them instead of sending messages

through Facebook, twitter, or any other form of technology. I do not even have text messages

on my phone because I do not like to text. Some people think that technology is everything but

not me.
