Outcome 1 Know how to recognise signs of abuse
1. Define the following types of abuse. * Physical abuse - can vary from hitting, biting, slapping, force feeding and pinching. To cause physical pain, injury or other physical suffering to a service user. * Sexual abuse - forcing a service user to take part in any sexual activities, performing sexual acts and forcing that person to watch sexual acts against their will, also making sexual threats and comments * Emotional/psychological abuse - subjecting the service user to bullying, verbal abuse, swearing and ridicule causing low self esteem. * Financial abuse - unauthorised use of the service users property, money or other valuables. * Institutional abuse - failure to provide basic care can occur in any care home, hospital or any in-patient setting. * Self neglect - is a behavioural condition in which an individual neglects to attend to their basic needs, such as personal hygiene, appropriate clothing, feeding, or tending appropriately to any medical conditions they have. * Neglect by others - when a support worker/carer who is responsible for the care of a service user fails to provide basic care. This can also cover Institutional abuse and self neglect.
2. Signs and symptoms * Physical abuse - indicators can be multiple bruising, fractures, burns, signs of force feeding when the service user refuses to eat, depression and weight loss, becoming withdrawn or aggressive and assaulting others. * Sexual abuse - torn, stained or bloody underwear, soreness around the genital area. Sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy. Loss of sleep and unexplained changes in behaviour and signs of self harm. * Emotional/psychological abuse - changes in behaviour, refusing to go to work or mix with friends or colleagues in activities the service
