Primordial God Uranus Research Paper
The great primordial god, Uranus, was defeated by his titan son, Cronus, because he castrated him with a sickle. The primordials “were an elder generation of gods who ruled the cosmos...They were responsible for the original ordering of time.” (theoi). The first of the primordial gods, Gaea, originated from a need. The Earth was never constant, with shapes and textures constantly changing. The air, land, and sea were too intertwined for anyone to separate (Napoli & Balit 2011). It was chaos. The Earth longed for order, needed it, and that is where Gaea was born from. Pontus and Uranus also originated from a need, but Gaea was the first. Though the primordials and titans were all-powerful and magnificent, they led to their own defeat. Gaea

He began a new age for the titans, with his titan sister Rhea as his wife. Only his parents weren’t happy. “Each parent, separate and hushed, prophesied to him that he would be stripped of power by his own son. The prophecy ate at him, for no one knew better than him the destruction a child could wreak. He grew sleepless, wide-eyed. Cronus, who had felt no fear as a child, now felt nothing but fear.” (Napoli & Balit 2011). Cronus, following in the same treacherous footsteps as his father, took inhumane measures to prevent the prophecy from being fulfilled. So, as Rhea gave birth to the beautiful children Hestia, Hera, Demeter, Poseidon, and Hades were born, he swallowed each of them whole. Rhea, like her mother Gaea, quickly tired of this behavior, so, when she felt that she was pregnant again, she went to Gaea for help. When she gave birth to Zeus, instead of presenting her son to Cronus, she handed him a rock swaddled in cloth, which Cronus swallowed without a second thought. Meanwhile, Zeus was hidden away on the island of Crete, where he was raised by peasants. When he came of age, he forced Cronus to swallow a potion, which made him vomit up all of his siblings. It was the bitterness of losing their children that sparked them into action. “Her children were thwarted when they should have been thriving. What had happened to tenderness? Where had mercy gone? Her husband had become monstrous. She spoke to the children within her. “Your father is evil. Listen to me. Do as I say. Then you can lead free lives.” (Napoli & Balit 2011). Without their mothers help, neither Cronus nor Zeus would have been able to end their father’s cruelty and set themselves free. These resentments would never had a chance to grow if Uranus and Cronus had not allowed fear to take control and seep into their hearts.
