It has been almost two centuries since the Union defeated the Confederates in the Civil War, however, one speech given by a president during the time of tragedy still emerges as one of the most influential speeches in American history. President Lincoln’s term spanned from the beginning to nearly the end of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865. The gravity of Lincoln’s presence was undeniable as he lead the North to winning the Civil War. One of the biggest disputes that sparked the Civil War was the topic of slavery. The North wanted to abolish slavery and the South wanted to keep slavery. They fought for equality but did not provide equality for all persons. This hypocritical action of slavery ripped the nation apart and plummeted the United States into the Civil War. President Lincoln fought for equality and reminded that all citizens of this country should have equal rights regardless of race and all deserve their unalienable rights. One of his most infamous speeches was the Gettysburg Address. As the president of the United States during the Civil War, Lincoln’s significance to the timeline defined the present nation. The Battle of Gettysburg was a battle that resulted in catastrophic loss for the North. However, Lincoln’s speech the “Gettysburg Address” altered the entire morale of the North after the many casualties, arguably resulting in the victory for the North. The Gettysburg Address was Lincoln’s way of reminding the Americans what they were fighting for and who they were fighting for, however, it was only until after Lincoln’s death did the nation realize the importance of his message.
