Predujice against the irish
Prejudices against the Irish
Irish people? Irish people are going to pubs every night and they are being greedy as the Scottish people. Whenever you walk in the night you will be able to notice at least twice as many drinkers as in rest of Europe. The country is in war with themselves all the time. The Protestants are fighting against the Catholics in the southern Ireland. The fight has been going on for many years as the people in the north want to join the United Kingdom.
A regular day in Ireland must be: Going to school followed by a ton of leprechaun in the school bus. We are driving through the Irish country with green hills along the road. Rainbows shall appear behind the white clouds and slowly fall to the ground. In the end of the rainbow track you will find Old Patricks pot o’ gold. A leprechaun will be guarding it and you must complete the three tasks to achieve unlimited wisdom and wealth. While dreaming about this green fairytale the bus driver would’ve crashed into the ditch. The reason of this crash will be him reaching for his beer mug underneath his seat. The only thing he wanted was a little morning zip. At the trip to the hospital you will notice that every day tons of drunk people going to get pumped out of alcohol. As I’m getting a tube down my throat the nurse will handle me a bill in my left hand which says “400£” When leaving hospital the Irish stereotypes will wander against the pub once again and this day will go on forever and ever. So I’m bringing my very own beer mug and a cage for the leprechauns we will meet on our way. Also I will claim that I’m an atheist as I’m not willing to get into trouble with neither the Catholics nor the Protestants.

Hoping to loosen up his tension, he decided to stop by at a near bar whose lights were still on in that late hour. The sign on its door read, ‘The Holy Cow Bar’, ‘At least’ he told himself ‘I will try to’.…

Published in Puck, America’s first successful comedic magazine containing several types of cartoons, on June 26, 1889 a cartoon entitled “The Mortar Of Assimilation And The One Element That Just Won’t Mix” clearly shows an Irishman rebelling against the rest of the American crowd with a knife in his hand, expressing violence, and possibly alcoholism. Through further research I found that how poorly the Irish were treated during this time period. The cartoon “The Mortar Of Assimilation And The One Element That Just Won’t Mix” expresses the idea Irishmen just do not belong in America, despite the several other races intertwined into our country. This cartoon brings me to the question; Why? Why were the Irish labeled as such outcasts? I have discovered three main reasons to answer this question: The Irish were labeled as violent, drunk, and having strange religious views.…

From “a race of savages” the Irish were able to integrate and achieve whiteness with an “Irish ethic” To make clear distinction from the other minorities, the Irish lashed out to attack the black and used them to facilitate their integration into society. In addition, through structural emergence in politic, they were able to organize entrance for opportunities and jobs. They actively pursued their political voice and emerged through Democratic party. Through leadership and rise of unions, there was a shift in representation. They went from a poor serving class to a skilled middle class laborers.…

Irish immigration to the United States was prominent after 1845-1848 due to a famine in Ireland. The Irish were seeking survival but endured many hardships because of prejudices against the Catholic religion. The Irish were also subject to face segregation and racism. Their daily lives were affected by redlining, double jeopardy, dual labor markets, glass ceilings, reverse discrimination, and institutional discrimination. These conditions made life for the Irish immigrants not only difficult but unbearable at times.…

The majority of Irish people post 1000 A.D were Catholic. In Ireland, there were laws enforced by the British government that removed power form the Catholics. These laws were called the Penal Laws. They never went under the church reform that England did in the 1500s. Because of all this, the British government used religious differences as a political tool towards the increasing colonial activity and so the English were considered a ruling class and the Irish were seen and treated as a minority. The Penal laws were intended to degrade the Irish so severely that they wouldn’t ever be able to threaten the Protestant rule. Most of the large farms in Ireland were owned by Protestants. This was because when a Catholic land owner died, the estate was equally divided among his sons, diluting the value. Also, if he had a Protestant son, that son would inherit all the land. This led to poverty. The environment that the Irish had to live in was very unhygienic. A census report in 1841 found that nearly half the families in rural areas lived in windowless mud cabins, most with no furniture other than a chair. It was said that pigs slept with their owners and heaps of manure lay by the doors.…

Ireland’s decision to join the European Union has had quite an impact on the county. Firstly it provided the Republic with a stage on which to assert its independence from Britain, which it relied upon (almost to fault) too heavily for trade. Having said this, many believe that it put the final nail in the coffin of the Ireland in which De Valera had envisaged, that being the God-fearing rural people who eschewed the excess of materialism. This is because it made Ireland much more like the core of Europe, especially in areas such as domestic policies. To many in the first instance, it took away some of Irelands sovereignty in which a great amount of men died for in recent history. However the European Union has/had made Ireland much more economically attractive, especially in the late 1990’s with the surge of the “Celtic tiger” which made Ireland an economic powerhouse of the European Union. However this prosperity was not to last, corruption and stupidity cost Ireland dear, as they soon realised the mansion of an economy they had built was being balanced on marshmallows. The change in Irish society from 1960’s had been very evident. From a largely homogeneous, nationalistic society in which the Catholic Church held strong control over society to a much more open pluralistic multinational society. 10% of the people in Ireland were actually born in another country. A staggering number for a country that was so homogeneous 40 years previous. The collapse of the Irish economy has also resulted in emigration levels not seen since the time of the Great Famine, it looks certain that Ireland is to lose another generation of young people, even with the European union member countries helping to bail out Irelands bank. However this has little effect on the people who have to leave to find work, most of these people’s money was not ties up in banks or property, therefore some people would…
