Practitioner Personal Statement
From a young age I’ve been driven to pursue a career that allows me to impact the lives’ of individuals daily. I’m excited to finally be able to put everything I’ve learned into action as a PA. My countless experiences have inspired me to be a PA who patients can know and trust. I’m excited to care for patients not only physically and mentally, but also emotionally and spiritually. I hope that while on rotations I’m able to fill the knowledge gaps I have and learn new techniques from experienced practitioners.

I saw first hand the work of a PA in a rural community. While shadowing Delphine, a primary care PA, I think back to one particular case where she saw a patient who in addition to her medical conditions, was grieving the loss of her husband. After Delphine treated the patient’s physical ailments she made sure the patient felt emotionally supported before finishing the appointment. It struck me that Delphine provides a tremendous service to the patients she serves. Especially in medically under-served areas, PAs provide holistic care, which includes mental wellness. Patient care goes beyond physical health but inevitably extends to emotional well-being. Providing quality care is my mission and seeing the care Delphine provided to her patients exemplified…

An ongoing controversial topic related to the Physician Assistant position is that people do not recognize PA’s as being ‘real’ doctors. It is true that physicians do have more authority, but it does not mean that they’re always more knowledgeable. A PA that’ve been in the field for 10 years will understand the practice better than an upcoming physician in clinical…

"Make a difference today for someone who is fighting for their tomorrow"-Jim Kelly. Growing up residing in a small, under populated rural area I noticed how my community lacked access to health facilities and providers. Noting that this was a necessity to have, yet so scarce, I decided that being a health care provider was the career for me. I grew up always surrounded by the health care setting; my mother was a Lab Technician who worked with several Physician Assistants. I was often in her office during after school hours of my elementary/middle school years.…

I wish to become an occupational therapist – a low-vision occupational therapist – first and foremost based on my personal experience with overcoming adversity associated with being visually impaired myself. When I was nine months old, I was involved in a car accident that left me legally blind in both eyes. Throughout my life I have continually faced challenges – both simple and more complex – and have found a way through most. I want to be able to help those who are going through very similar circumstances as I have, and be a part of the process that sees them gain independence throughout their daily lives. It can be difficult for a health care professional in any field to truly know what their client is feeling, seeing, thinking, wanting,…

I someday want to work as an occupational therapist. Occupational therapy (OT) as a field, focuses on a variety of physical and functional impairments. Occupational therapists and assistants work with their consumers to help them to regain functionality to be able to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, getting dressed, eating, etc. The physiology of exercise plays a huge role in therapy and is definitely incorporated into therapy sessions. One main component of OT intervention is upper-body strengthening. Strengthening exercises and activities are performed to improve the performance of weakened muscles. In conjunction with traditional weighted exercises, occupational therapists also use therapeutic activities.…

In my life, I have been a patient too many times to say I am well familiar with different roles in health care. When I was fourteen I was diagnosed with a type of cancer called Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and after six months of treatment I decided I wanted to help others like the many clinicians that helped me. After I graduated high school I got a job at an outpatient physical therapy clinic and there my true passion began. This inspired me to apply and eventually get accepted into the Physical Therapist Assistant program at Gateway Community College. The Physical Therapist Assistant program at Gateway will help me reach my goal of becoming a Physical Therapist Assistant by developing my character professionally, giving me the knowledge to help patients, and pass my board to receive my license as a Physical Therapist Assistant.…

My professional goal is to become a teacher with hard work and dedication I know I can reach my lifetime goal. For my extra-curricular activities, I have attended the Head Start at Brookhaven Community College where I have volunteered over thirty hours in a semester to get myself prepared for the profession. Going to the local Head Start gave me the opportunity to see if this is really what I want to do for many years. I put myself in a position where I actually enjoyed what I was doing, I had patience which a lot of people don’t have to teach younger kids. I worked with three to five years old, I had to show them I was the leader. In my four years of High School, I have taken my time out to be a leader in my school. I was vice-president freshman…

Spending time in clinicals with this woman in particular, helping her with her daily routine as well as getting to know her on a personal level developed a bond I will never forget. This woman, 96 years young, was full of wisdom and didn’t hesitate to share it all with me. Through this experience I learned what it meant to be a health care provider and truly care for the person I was helping, even when I had never met them before. I’ll never forget the last day of my clinical rotations as I stopped by for a final goodbye to each of the patients I had helped care for and their reactions. Everyone I had helped was more than grateful for my time spent with them, but Beatrice, my last stop before leaving Toledo hospital, broke into tears telling me how I was the hardest worker she had ever had and how much she would miss our time together. It was that moment that I realized this is want I needed to do with my life and that making a difference in someone’s life through healthcare would be the ultimate high.…

Through this experience, I have gained confidence in my ability to perform adequate physical assessments, identify abnormalities, and formulate evidenced-based plans of care. In evaluating myself, I consider myself to have experienced substantial growth in knowledge, skill, and ability as a result of this clinical rotation. For instance, in performing my first Pap Smear, I was very nervous and was not smooth in my delivery of the service. After guidance from Ms. Rossow, I was able to perform several more, each time becoming more proficient. Similarly, as the time progressed, my assessments improved, enabling me to identify abnormalities correctly, formulate correct diagnoses, and create thorough and pertinent…
