A GUIDE TO SEALING CRYOGENIC AND LOW TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS
Introduction
The purpose of this report is to give the reader an appreciation of typical applications and problems encountered when sealing cryogenic and / or low temperature products. The term "cryogenics" can be defined as " the study of low temperatures or the production of the same".

Cryogenics is:
• the study of how to produce low temperatures. • the study of what happens to materials when you’ve cooled them down.

Cryogenics is not:
• the study of freezing and reviving people, called "cryonics", a confusingly similar term. Although cryogenics is often perceived by many to be limited to liquefied gases, it also encompasses low temperature hydrocarbons, refrigerants and coolants, to name a few. Therefore, this report will discuss all applications where the temperature falls below zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). Low temperature applications are found in a many different industries. These will include: • • • • • • • • • • Pharmaceutical Food production Brewing Chemical Refrigeration Automotive Petroleum Textile Electronics Aerospace

The list above is not exhaustive, but gives the reader an appreciation of potential markets for mechanical seals sealing low temperatures. It is beyond the scope of this report to detail every possible application. Instead the author will discuss the most commonly encountered applications, and suggest suitable sealing solutions.

Stainless steel commonly react with certain substance that probably will produce some defect whether inner or outer surface. This material contains small casting defects, mainly shrinkage cavities, due to the manufacturing process. Commonly in industries related to piping system, stainless steel pipelines and cylinder tubes are equipment or object that frequently used in our removable insulation installation. In most industrial nowadays, stainless steel pipes are frequently exposed to high temperatures and conditions, by insulating them is significant to energy savings. Although the reality that stainless steel is less corrosive than normal carbon steels, must remember that stainless steel is corrosion resistant, not corrosion proof.…

Sealed Air has been the market leader in the coated bubble product segment. It is considering introducing uncoated bubble product lines as it is gaining acceptance as a cheap alternative to the coated bubble product. Sealed Air may not be able to maintain and improve the current market share just by offering the uncoated bubble product. Instead, Sealed Air needs to introduce new uncoated bubble products at competitive prices to maintain yearly sales growth and market share.…

If Augat had introduced the product in 1988 when the LRC division first conceived it – they would have been a market leader by now (in 1990). But in early 1989, an innovative new company, Raychem became a surprising market leader in the new connector business that was promised to have very good insulation properties for external connectors. So Raychem benefited from a first-mover advantage. Therefore, it was able to gain clout and its sales and market share soared. By launching Snap-N-Seal in Canada the company needs to overcome several problems. Moreover, those MSOs that are already using the EZF connector must be convinced to switch over to the Snap-N-Seal connector and tools. This would involve a considerable Capital Expenditure for the MSOs, the value proposition for end-users (MSOs) should be substantially high for them to replace the existing Raychem tools/connectors (or any other competitors) for Augat’s Snap-N-Seal connector/tool.…

Peter Browning was promoted to the position of Vice-President of Continental White Cap in 1984 after holding the position of Vice President and General Manager of Continental’s Bondware Division where he turned losses into profits. Browning was faced with the daunting task of rejuvenating and repositioning the Chicago division in the face of upcoming competition from other producers of vacuum sealed metal closures for glass jars. In addition, White Cap’s customer base was being influenced by the new emerging plastic-packaging technology (Jick & Peiperl, 2011). Below, we discuss the obstacles Peter Browning faced in the wake of one of the biggest challenges of his career. Even Richard Hofmann, Executive Vice President of the parent company Continental Group, acknowledged that Browning’s assignment put him “smack dab between a rock and a hard place” (Jick & Peiperl, page 210).…

Physics teacher Robert Ettinger publishes The Prospect of Immortality, introducing the idea of “cryonics,” the preservation of the human body by freezing until the time when advanced technologies can revivify it. In 1972 the company Alcor, now in Scottsdale, Arizona, was born, and in 1976 it performed the first “cryopreservation.” You can preserve your entire body or just your head, and the price varies accordingly.…

The researchers thought of using eggshell, styrofoam and gasoline as a sealant. To make the sealant, the researchers put the styrofoam in the gasoline and melted it by stirring the gasoline. After stirring, the pounded eggshell was mixed. The researchers conducted four experiments. The commercialized sealant and the eggshell sealant were observed in it’s durability, sealing ability, physical appearance and insolubility. The researchers observed the results and discovered that if the hole in the roof was lesser in diameter, it was durable and if the diameter was greater, the sealant was less durable. The researchers considered the time it took to dry.…
