Power vs. Politics
Power and Politics Power and politics are noticeable in everyday life whether it is at work, school, television, or even children’s sports team. There is always somebody with either self imposed or justified power making decisions and practicing a form of politics. The basis for power and politics is ‘the degree of interconnectedness among individuals” (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2008, pg. 1). This means that as individuals work towards achieving their own goals they must also consider the interests of others. This paper will briefly describe the essence power and politics and different managerial strategies utilizing power and politics.
Power and Politics In Organizational Behavior, power is defined as the ability for one person to get another person to do something the first person wants done or the ability to make things happen in the way one wants them to (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2008). While power is used to make things happen, influence is what a person acquires when using power and it is recognizable through the behavioral response of whomever he or she has influence on. The essence of power is literally the control over the behavior of others and without a direct or indirect connection, behavior cannot be changed (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2008). In organizational settings, managerial power is derived from the ability one has to combine the many factors of positional and personal power. Positional power includes legitimate power, reward or coercive power, process power, information power, and representative power. Legitimate power is simply the “right to command” one attains by holding a higher position in an organization. Reward or coercive power is when a manager figure uses extrinsic or intrinsic rewards or punishments to gain control of others. Only a couple examples of the six that exist but one can see from the examples that the above powers are justified in one way or another based on the position one holds in the

    In my organization, there is a definite perception of abuse of power. There have been several instances where both coercive and reward power has been present. “Coercive power is dependent on fear.” (Robbins & Judge, 2009 p 452) Coercive and reward are both formal powers. At one point in time, employees within a particular department lived in constant fear for their job security. It was no secret that the company was eliminating positions and right sizing. Because the management team had the power to decide who stayed, it became apparent that they were using a coercive power to make their decisions. The assigned tasks and expectations were perceived by employees as unreasonable. It was also clear that they were using reward power as well.     Coercive power is a formal kind of power that I believe is the most negative among the other forms of power. The person who uses this kind of power places fears to subordinates; therefore, I believe communication from group members to leaders is limited by electronic means, like email, because members are intimidated by the coercive power of the leader. If the individual does not comply with the company’s policies, norms or does not reach a goal desired by management, then the fear of being fired, demoted, or punished is in place. The person is intimidated by threads from management. I find that threads of been fired due to lack of compliance is a delicate approach to change the behaviors of others. In these cases, members may be displeased of the thread and may start looking for other positions outside of the company; hence the group could deteriorate without accomplishing desired goals. In some other cases, management can assign a member to another job that he or she finds unpleasant.     In an organization, the use of power comes in many shapes and forms. Hierarchical power is known to be the typical distribution of power in most organizations. For example, a business usually consists of a President, followed by a general manager, department manager and finally, the employees. Decisions occur in a hierarchical linear process, from the bosses down to the employees. Other forms of power in organizations can be more subjective. Power may not always take the typical hierarchical or down-the-ladder approach. That being said, the use of power can greatly affect desired outcomes. In a study of Midwifery students, Kantek and Gezer argue that “the use of power strategies in teacher–student relationships affects students’ learning, school experiences, motivation, accomplishment, satisfaction, future career expectations, mood, and method of handling conflict” (2010). The inappropriate use of power in an organization can result in immediate and irreparable effects. These effects can foster less than favorable work environments leading to unreceptive and unmotivated workers. Conversely, power can take a more inspirational or contagious approach. This type of power is known as referent power. Peers and coworkers alike are influenced by individuals that possess this type of power. In this paper, a case study will be presented that identifies an organizational problem highlighting the effects of power.     POWER. The most important and unyielding condition of management isn't human relations, communication skills or employee empowerment, but power. POWER. Defined as the ability to influence and produce a desired effect on other individuals without having one's own behavior modified in any undesired way by other individuals. On one hand, some people view power as being limited in amount, kind of like a pie, with constant conflict about who gets the largest slice. On the other hand, people view it as open-ended, having no limits, except those imposed by the situation. The latter may be the more reasonable way of viewing power.
