Power Of Words In Frank's Life After The Civil War
In addition to the major themes of the book, another theme would be the power of words. This greatly impacts Frank when he gives his first speech. He did not consider it successful because the kids were not listening, they were critiquing him, and they did not care about what he had to say. Nevertheless, he received letters from the students thanking him for coming and demonstrating their appreciation for the speech. Frank did not believe they were truly expressing the gratitude he thought they were saying, rather he thought it was just an assignment the teacher had them do. He concluded that because he was a skinhead I have to hate them as well. What he experienced in his short time in prison was more than he ever did before that. Frank became much wiser speaking to the other prisoners. When he got out of prison and went back to Strike Force the gang that he had created and seeing the things they were doing he felt that the things they did were no longer part of his life he let go everything negative after entering prison. Frank after a month out just stopped going to the meetings and stayed as far away from it because he no longer wanted to be part of that life anymore.
